Soon, the post-Trump Repugnants and their Department of Fatherland Security may round us up at 3: 00 am and ship us off, only slightly crippled per Department of Assault directive, to FEMA Sustainable Energy Crematorium #13. I see myself in bloody rags, in a freezing, drafty cattle car bound for Christmas-season Utah with Rachel Maddow, John Stewart and Stephen Colbert, lamenting what we should have done instead.
In any case, no-one is entitled to judge mere mortals who tightrope-walked that fine line in Nazi Germany. Some Nazis shielded rebels, many Catholics went to the wall to protect Jews, the clean Wehrmacht systematically disposed of political troublemakers with penal battalions of not-for-the-record lethally, and my great-aunt sheltered her Jewish lover in Paris. So what? Goebbels talked his beloved wife into killing herself and their kids. Goering talked a political officer of the U. S. American Army into letting him cheat the hang man. None of that predicts our heroism or cowardice in future confrontations with the Psychopath Unbound; only our future actions and theirs will tell. In the meantime, judge not lest ye be judged.

Hi, thank you for your great series in general and this episode in particular. I am Jewish and my name was that of my great-grandfather who was murdered by Nazis in Lithuania.
This raises interesting questions regarding the deification of science, so-called Scientism. In the US (I live in Israel) there is much talk of The Science. But you describe in this episode the great promise and terrible power of science. You describe the tragedy of Fritz Haber. I think this is a cautionary tale of relying on the science without checks and balances.
Great work, thank you, Sean

Meitner should have perhaps written that letter to Hahn and filed it. Hahn was responsible for getting her to Holland whence she got to Denmark. He even gave her a diamond ring which she could use to buy freedom, maybe if she were caught on the way. Meitner allegedly turned down work on the Manhattan project but frankly Oppenheimer would not have had her. Too much angst and not enough output. Leona Woods for example made considerable contributions while Meitner sat in Swedenn looking at her navel. I refuse to take her seriously. TE. Fidler

What an excellent overview of the rise of the Nazi party, its antiscience streak, the corrosive moral effect it had on those trying to live through it. My great uncle, who spent most of the war in a POW camp, told me we must not be judgemental about the compromises so many people had to make to survive those terrible times. Listening to you tell the story of Planck, Hahn and Meitner brings this home to me. You tell their story beautifully. Thank you.

as a german i have just discovered your videos and even though you slaughter most pronounciations it's completely irrelevant when looking at how informative these videos are for me, i don't need any german content after this even though obviously english is my second language this was very comprehensive even. i of course know most of the history but did not know much about the science side and happenings at the same time. thank you so much!

Yep. It does no situation any good to ignore it because it is unpleasant. There is a nasty human tendency to so prefer pleasantries that we are willing to look away from anything that is unpleasant unless the unpleasantness is toward us and we can't escape it. It's not that we should make other people's suffering our business but that we should be willing to acknowledge the flaws in our own society and, whenever possible, help those we can.

I am german, and I once talked to my grandmother, who was born in 1922 about the myth you sometimes hear that ordinary people did not know what was going on. Hell yes they did! Of course most people did not know any details but they knew that some things veryy rotten were going on. As you said, the disappearances of jewish people, and other so called undesireables and they others things that happend before. yes, they knew.

Kathy - I really enjoy your videos and I want you to know I am not criticising but critiquing your delivery. The narrative is great but its hard to watch your partial gesticulations. We kinda need to see all of them or none at all. The way the video is edited makes it difficult to watch; to see a hand come out of nowhere distracts from your story telling abilities.
None the less, I really enjoy them a lot. Thanks.

ALL of this 'Dark History' part of World War II happened at least three decades before I was born, at thousands of miles away at a French colony of Indochina, but at any rate, the lessons of history are numerous and cannot change the facts, except for those who can learn from history and influence their government(s) in a positive way. Thanks greatly for your fascinating storytelling work in this video.

Dear Lady, although I find your videos interesting, in this one I sensed what could be a double standard on opinion or want of fact checking. Don't you think that that nazi story of a clearly deranged dutch citizen setting the Bundestag ablaze, all by himself, and placidily remaining sat inside waiting to be arrested, a very unlikely one?

Apropos The burning of the Reichstag It has never been proven that the burn of the Reichstag was a communist initiative. The Nazis blamed the communist, thus giving them the excuse that they needed, to band and clamp-down on the communist party and other socialist parties that had their support within the German working -class.

I find it curious that my son completed undergraduate and postgraduate physics degrees and had no teaching on ethics and physics. Also remember there was a justified fear of communism who killed far more than the Nazis. Scientists on all sides have been complicit in creating ever better weapons.

Your video is an Ode to Todays Europe and a work of art. Its also a moving statement on Human fickleness and I hope it may become an inspiration for every young decent Person, 100 years later, to better understand the Joy of Freedom and beauty of the European Union. Love you Kathy.

So it needs almost 40 years since I left school, to get a teacher who is able to tell me the history of my country in an entertaining and interesting way in a foreign language
At least it put a smile on my face to hear wunderkind as a common word in both languages.

While in highschool and college I worked for a Holocaust survivor. The only reason he survived is that he had a talent for repairing radio and audio equipment. Much of the understanding I have of radio receiver technology is due to Gerhard Isaac's influence.

You said, with the exception of WWI veterans. Of course he could not have literally referred to that war as WWI because WWII had not began yet. Even during WWII, WWI probably was not called WWI. THey probably didn't number the wars until after the war.

WOW! Your talks (lectures) are spell binding. Thank you for your insights into that horror of a time. I was born in January, 1943 - right in the middle of it. I have tried to understand this period from many sources. Your talks show a keen insight. Thank you

You press on about Heisenberg and allow comments such as, Hate him now considering he has a family, yet no mention that Haber killed millions with chemical warfare in the 1stt WW and that his wife killed herself, such was her horror of what he was doing
reply

You don't depress, but warn us! The risks are continuously faced over the world, under distinct fascists and dictatorial regimes, and you presentation demonstrated that no compromisses should ever be admitted. Otherwise, that would be complicity.

I am 85 years old and hold degrees in physics. I am learning so much that I did not know from this series. These videos were more valuable than all those years of science education. To know about l the people is so important. Thank you Kathy!
