Watch the story of Magellan's voyage on Simple History MikeVdPCA: This is a pretty good review of Drake, especially the circumnavigation. It glosses over the treachery of the Spanish at San Juan de Ulua which was really instrumental in giving Drake the motive of revenge and financial recovery. The part of the story after leaving Mexico is a bit messed up. Drake sailed well out to sea, not along the coast. He was trying to get as far north as possible to find the strait. There is wide agreement that he reached the area of the Oregon Dunes (Oregon State Parks and Oregon Historical Society and others. The winds kept him from going north, so he headed south to Drakes Bay. That's recognized by the National Park Service, California State Parks and many others. then, abandoning the idea of sailing across the top of North America, he headed west - a brief stop at the Farallon Islands, then across the Pacific.

Hero? was a pirate, sailing on others maps and taking advantadge unguarded cities, that is why he always failed to took a proper awared enemy, after armada victory he suffered a co. lmplete defeat when trying to get Azores, Lisbon and sack santiago, yhen he would fail in every attempt of looting spanish maine, and whe left his live trying. Drake would be a real oportunistic pirate, but a hero? for what?

I'm interested in the alleged marooning by Drake of about 200 Ottoman prisoners of war on the Atlantic coast in the mid 1580s. They may have become part of the Powhatan tribe, which apparently had a sociopolitical system similar to the Ottoman Sultan, including a harem. There are place names and dialect words in or near the Southeast that have possible Turkish or Arabic origin.

If my understanding is correct, Drake brought back more than entire gdp of then-England. On a single ship. Quite an accomplishment really. And it allowed Elizabeth I to continue meddling in Dutch politics, helping them to break away from Spanish Empire's rule and to become the greatest geopolitical power of the world eventually.

Rules of circumnavigating the earth:
1. Set sail with 4 ships
2. Lose one of them in the coast of argentina
3. Have one ship return home in the patagonia
4. Lose another ship while wandering in the south ocean
5. Head to philippines, then to indonesia
6. Only one ship is allowed to return home

I never knew that Drake circumnavigated the globe. I'm an Englishman so that is seriously embarrassing. I have a question. You said he left with 5 ships and 164 men. That seems like his ships were massively understaffed. Are those figures accurate? I'd have expected 200 men per ship since they were warships.

who care this man always after the spanish.
He was defeated in Spain with the english armada runing away with the tale betwen legs and trying to invade America with almost 180 vessels aswell by BLAS DE LEZO at cartagena COLOMBIA.
This pirate is a shame for England and leaves a lot to be desired.

Quite interesting the story of one of the best known pirates worldwide. Especially the beginning of it, rise and fall of it. You should also make a video about the Contra Armada and its defeat by the Spanish causing the bankruptcy of England. You also need to talk about the second part of this story.

What was epic was his humiliating defeat against a tiny Spanish armada. So much for the British hero lol. Drake was basically a thief, just like all British pirates, privateers, corsairs and buccaneers of that time. And just like the Somalian pirates nowadays, there's no much difference.

He murders, robs and plunders from other humans that he did not rightfully earn himself, all for the sake of fame and glory - sounds like a psychopath and nothing more than a government backed thug to me. But everyone in the comments celebrating how awesome he is.

What a life! Miraculously sails around Cape Horn. Sails across the great Pacific and makes it back to England. Helps defeat the Spanish Armada and eventually dies near Portobelo on Panamas Caribbean coast while raiding Spanish forts. What a mariner.

Fracis Drake, silver medal around the world and pirate. He eventually died in one more of his failed attacks on the Spanish empire. British historiography has spent 400 years trying to make him much more than he really was.

Minute 1: 34, I do not understand why Drake fleet capture Portuguese ships when Portugal and England have the well known Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of 1373 that was signed on 16 June 1373 and still prevails to this day

A hero? Just because he made loads of money for rich investors? He's a thief, a murderer, and most of his crew died making this voyage - i bet their families weren't compensated. Overall scumbag.
reply

You forgot to mention at the end his shameful defeat with the Drake-Norris English Armada against Spain, in 1589, where he lost 40 ships. I suggest you can call it the English Vincible Armada Fiasco
reply

Im a bit coin confused, why would drake be praised as the greatest seaman in English history when he robbed, pillaged and plundered every ship he encountered just like a pirate?
reply

I worked on the Golden Hinde replica ship, which is currently in dry dock in London. It is a lot smaller than one could imagine for what it accomplished.

His circumnavigation adventure is a potential multi-part series that can get lots and lots of views. A story worth being told

I'd settle for the balist stones from the wreck. It would set myself and my family for multiple generations to come.
reply

Being from San Francisco we see his name a lot towards the Tiburon peninsula and a lot of things are named after him
