Napoleon's Great Blunder: Spain 1808

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
In 1808, Napoleon's rivalry with Britain led to an ill-fated intervention in Portugal and Spain, that sparked a nationalist revolt against the French. At Bailn Napoleon's Empire suffered its first major defeat, and though Napoleon himself then arrived in Spain to reassert French military dominance, he could not prevent the escape of Sir John Moore's small British army, after its defensive victory at Corunna on 16 January 1809. The British army would return, under new leadership, to play a major part in his downfall. Get early access and a vote on future topics by supporting us on

The other unique thing about 1808, Napoleon was offered a breach loading double barrel shotgun or slug gun that fired almost identically like modern firearms. The breech loading mechanism was slightly different but it was much faster to reload. Because it required carrying an extra component for the firearm to function. He turned it down. That device would have made his army indestructible at the time. He could have reduced his military Presence by 2/3 of the number of soldiers and been far more effective with them. As a result the cartridge firearm went into Oblivion until it was starting to be toyed with in the 1850s.

Napoleon: Europe's paternalistic good guy.
He just wants to help you out a little. Sure he'll dismantle your government and culture. But hey, they had their problems! Then he'll take your wealth. Consider it a payment for his services! Next he'll take your freedoms. You won't need them when you're working dutifully. Then he'll take your men for his army. He needs an army to help others like he helped you! Sure, some women will get raped and some priests will get murdered and some counter-revolutionaries will be put to death. A small price to pay for the glorious change he's brought.

Thanx to the mighty British forces whom expelled napoleons imperial French forces out of Spain. so let me just say. it wasnt the Spaniards who beat the French. it was actually the Britishthe Spaniards were already decimated by the Frenchand besides the Spanish forces were weak and cowards which they still are to this day. but the British did the work. NOT them

I read that, besides all of the above, Napoleon's brother, Joseph, coveted a crown also, and since there was none available, Napoleon decided to take the king of Spain's. He thought that conquering Spain would cost him only 40, 000 men. A country with so many friars was easy to conquer. But, it was not.
The conquest cost him about 600, 000 men.

At the battle of Bailen, the (future) argentinian General San Martin was taking his first steps in the miltary serving as an officer under General Castano. He would then embrace revolutionary ideals fighting Spain in South America, commanding international forces, and liberating Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

A lot of the places Napoleon invaded, he made a pretty decent pitch to the locals that his rule would actually better than the government they had, which was debatably true. Tried that in Spain too, but the the cultural changes he forced were too broad, too quick and the Spanish werent buying it.

Art played a huge role in his over-through. An artist used charcoal to render drawings of the brutality of his March through Spain. Impalements seemed to be the preferred choice of death. These renderings would find themselves back in Paris and the tide turned against him. Art always moves history.

This is fantastic. Of what I know of the Napoleonic era, I never knew a single thing about Napoleon's experience in Spain other than it was a headache. I learned so much from this and am excited to watch the next two about Iberia, and as many as I can in time.
The books look awesome too.

This comment section is so sad. 2022 and people are still obsessed with their nation states. Imaginary lines in the soil that they seem to genuinely believe determine the content of their character, rather than just which historic aristocrats exploited whom.

People saying that France have the best war record forget that their dearly beloved said that history is just a pack of lies agreed upon. He knew the French were inferior to those around them and that the records must be falsified.

3 times Napoleon went to conquer Portugal, 3 times he failed. 3 Times the British tried to conquer Portugal, 3 times they failed. More than 500 years of spain trying to conquer Portugal? Epic History, you can do the mat LMAO

All Napoleon wanted to do was rule the world and end the parasitic royals and so called elite. But they got the oppressed poor of europe to defend them. By calling him the anti christ May God help the human race.

A blunder indeed. The subsequent massive Spanish guerilla resistance was so ferocious that even the puny Brits became able to establish a precarious foothold on the farthest extremity of the continent.

The all seeing eye at Isadores front gate- sees all views. The gods have not checked much on earth, as they dont have the time. But on your individual final judgement- you will get all clarity.

Napoleon's blunder wasn't the invasion of Spain. It was his political nepotism of choosing his brother as King, rather than the Spanish descendent. This was just too much for the Spanish.

Curiously, at the same time the spanish were fighting for they independecia they were fighting against the independencia of their american colonies. Who's the bad guy then, ha?
reply

The greatest betrayal. When France occupied Spain the majority of the Spanish army was in Denmark and the Netherlands. They were protecting France from an English landing.

You should mention what the English did in San Sebastian or how many infrastructures were destroyed and pieces of art vandalised or stolen by the French and the British.
