Our series will explore the lives of all 26 Marshals, and rank them according to our own judgement of their achievements as Marshals Martin: No matter what you think you pulled
You'll find it's not enough
No matter who you think you know
You won't get through
It's a given L. A. law
Someone's faster on the draw
No matter where you hide
I'm coming after you, you
No matter how the race is run
It always ends the same
Another room without a view
Awaits downtown
You can shake me for a while
Live it up in style
No matter what you do
I'm going to take you down
Shakedown, breakdown, take down
Everybody wants into the crowded line
Breakdown, take down
You're busted
Let down your guard, honey
Just about the time you're thinkin' it's alright
Breakdown, take down
You're busted (oh, oh, uh)
This is a town where everyone
Is reaching for the top
This is a place where
Second best will never do
It's okay you want to shine
But once you step across that line
No matter where you hide
I'm coming after you
Shakedown, breakdown, take down
Everybody wants into the crowded line
Breakdown, take down
You're busted
Shakedown, breakdown, honey
Just about the time you're thinking it's alright
Breakdown, take down
You're busted
[Break]
Oh, busted
Oh oh
Shakedown (breakdown, breakdown (takedown, takedown
Everybody wants into the crowded line
Breakdown (take down, takedown (shakedown)
You're busted (busted)
Shakedown (breakdown, breakdown (take down, honey
Just about the time you're thinking it's alright
Breakdown (take down, takedown (shakedown)
You're busted
Shakedown, breakdown, take down
Everybody wants into the crowded line
Breakdown, take down
You're busted
Let down your guard, honey
Just about the time you're thinking it's alright
Breakdown, take down
Oh, you're busted
Shakedown, breakdown, take down
Everybody wants into the crowded line
Breakdown, take down
You're busted
Let down your guard, honey
Just about the time you're thinking it's alright

On Grouchy: I think it should also be noted the Grouchy wasn't versed in independent command. He was a new Marshall and historically just directed small units of cavalry in support of an infantry commander. Napoleon expecting him (in addition to the correct statement that Napoleon often chewed out Marshalls for not following his orders to the letter) was really just a failing on Napoleon's part. The Waterloo Campaign is really littered with bad personnel decisions: The sideling of Davout, using Soult as an administrator rather than a field commander, trusting key strategic roles to Ney (who is a legend with good reason but never excelled at big picture thinking) and Grouchy.

A criticism and a question:
Why is Brune marked down so much here?
Is it because Napoleon didn't like him for being a die-hard republican?
I don't agree with, or perhaps I don't understand, Brune being written off as an incompetent commander in Italy, when he was in charge of the entirely successful defeat of Austria at Pozzolo (1800) and the subsequent pursuit, which happened simultaneously to Moreau's achievement at Hohenlinden.
I imagine with Brune advancing from Italy, and Moreau advancing from Bavaria, Austria would have been in deep sh! t, if Napoleon had not wanted to wrap up the war A. S. A. P.
So, why say his command was 'calamitous'?

Hard for us in 2021 to truly comprehend just how effective, lethal and all incompassing the french were at that time with napoleon leading. Earning everything good spoken about them this day with zero fear and always fighting for each other rather than their own legacy. The aristocrats world has been left behind, a massive thanks to napoleon and his men physically kickin' the hell out of the born Rich-so they're better than you no matter what's. A real man that's earned all he has will always be far superior across the board from the Rich cross dressers

I will say even to this day, many many years later after these events. Napoleon's Marshals. Historians, professionals and people with an interest. it is a matter of discussion. That is fascinating to me.
During it's time, the ability to wage war as Napoleon did within the framework of armies/corps commanded by these Marshals. amazing.
I'll keep my own favorites a secret. ;-)
All the best.
Cheers.

What impresses me the most about these Marshals and Napoleons Army was the meritocracy at a time when many other armies had to buy their rank. British Army officers at this time were only rich gentlemen. While these French Marshals had a varied background and not all came from wealth or nobility. Many started at the bottom and worked their way up the ranks, by proving themselves in battle.

Hi, I would like to translate that video into Turkish if you do not mind, sir. In order to do so I need all the text. I would like to know If you let me have it? Otherwise, I'll myself rewrite it, trying to translate. You can be sure of the fact that I will not copy your videos, by no means.

Napoleon brought in a meritocratic, effective and adorned aristocracy that wasn't a mere accumulator of old privileges, makeup and grand names, nor a collection of murderous tyrants as in the revolution. However, the poisonous aspects of power and corruption were already being felt.

Someone tell me why Brune was so poorly rated?
I thought after Holland in 1799, he beat the Austrians in Italy (Pozzolo) with a much bigger force?
He never gets a run after this battle. why is that?

11. 57 This idiot could not anticipate an obvious issue. He even has thrown in the fire the uniform and medals of Frederick the Great without thinking about a safety place.

As an American I love the history of any nation especially all the things in Europe with all the empires kings and wars and even how we got here because of it still kinda crazy

great job for this, thank you. As a french man I always wonder why we can't do such documentaries like this. Maybe it's because we never had ability to talk about ourself

Looking for info. Have any of the marshal batons survived to the present era? I would love to see one. Obviously the most desirable would be Davout, Lennes, Ney and Murat
reply

Interesting that there was a counter-Revolutionary revolt in Bordeaux. That gives credence to the fictional storyline in Sharpe of an alleged similar uprising.

Terror in war, ornament in peace I love this so much it embodies the idea of those who know how to wield a sword but choose not too

I love how you publicly present some of the generals that were likely to become marshals and indeed, they should have become ones

Thanks for sharing these videos its nice to hear about some of the lesser known Marshals especially here in the UK.

I love how the great Marshal Davout was the youngest, but was Ben Franklin bald and looked the oldest.

8: 26 Small wonder that Napoleon would later rather contemptuously refer to Brune as A Bold Plunderer.
