Napoleon in Russia ALL PARTS

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
In 1812 Napoleon invaded Russia with the largest army Europe had ever seen, composed of troops from France as well as Poland, Germany, Italy and several other allied states. The campaign that followed saw the Russians use scorched earth tactics to deny the enemy supplies, while Napoleon advanced further and further into Russia, searching in vain for the decisive blow that would force Emperor Alexander to negotiate peace. Even after winning a costly victory at Borodino and occupying Moscow, Napoleon's invitation to negotiate received no response. Napoleon found himself 500 miles from friendly territory, outnumbered, poorly supplied, and with winter approaching. What followed was one of the most harrowing and disastrous events in military history - the Retreat from Moscow - in which Russian attacks, freezing weather and starvation virtually wiped out the once-proud Grande Arme. Special thanks to Alexander Averyanov for kind permission to use his paintings 'Battle of Smolensk', 'Artilleryman's Exploits', 'Prince Pyotr Bagration at Borodino

This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog.
- Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle.
He was haunted by this scene until his own death.

It's crazy how recent this was, we literally have photographs of veterans who fought in the battle of WATERLOO. We are as close to those men that fought in WW1 as they were to those who fought in the Napoleonic Wars, some of them might have even met their grandfathers who were there. So close yet so far.

Military arrogance led the Grande Armee to destruction. Poor hygiene, food and water led to catastrophic losses to disease as has always happened until proper military health care arrived with the Crimean War.

I am really fascinated by these videos and in this case would love to know why England and any allies did not invade France and cut off any retreat and pretty much destroy the whole French army?

Hey man. Do you know that Napoleon is of Albanian Herretige and not French. This is 100% fact. Have fun with resources, the day where you going to lean something new has come.

If napoleon just followed the coast north and invaded St. Petersburg instead of Moscow and followed the coast back to France, all of Europe would be called France lol
reply

I may be wrong, but I have never heard of a war that took the estimated time, or less. Wars take on a life of their own, and do not respect our plans.

Moral of the story. Napoleon is a failure in history. We must learn fr his mistakes of miscalculations, logistics, geo environment, weather etc.
reply

Almost after 200 years the European with the Americas came back again to fight Moscow! The result is obvious n history is repeating itself.
reply

Of course history is repeating itself, cumrades, like with Finland. Or maybe ussr's staggering success in Afghanistan inlike US
reply

One can only imagine the horrors seen with the eyes of the men who survived a campaign with an 84 percent casualty rate
reply

2 reasons why he wasn't successful. His Marshals weren't as determined as he was and the Tsar was.
