SHIPWRECK FOUND: Doomed WW2 Warship 3 MILES UNDERWATER - History's Greatest Mysteries: Solved Dr. : Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side it was comin' back from the island of Tinian, just delivered the bomb. 1100 men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger, 13 footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water? You tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know. was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light the sharks come cruisin'. So we formed ourselves into tight groups and the idea was, the shark comes to the nearest man and that man, he'd start poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark would go away. Sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark, he looks right into you. Right into your eyes. You know the thing about a shark, he's got. lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eye. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin'. Until he bites ya and those black eyes roll over white. And then, ah then you hear that terrible high pitch screamin' and the ocean turns red and spite of all the poundin' and the hollerin' they all come in and rip you to pieces. Y'know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men! I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand! I don't know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday mornin' I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland, baseball player. I thought he was asleep, reached over to wake him up. Bobbed up and down in the water, just like a kinda top. Up ended. He'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon the fifth day a Lockheed Ventura saw us and come in low and 3 hours later a big fat PBY comes down and start to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened? Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, 1100 men went in the water, 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway. we delivered the bomb.

This is a wonderful story however the pictures you were showing of the ship that was sunk were pictures of the Titanic wreck nearly half of World Way in the wrong ocean why not show real pictures of the Indianapolis wreck site. Sorry but shipwrecks is one of my greatest interest and have known and study the wreck of the Titanic since it's finding in 1985 trust me there's not much I can't recognize about that ship but it would be nice to see some pictures of the Indianapolis wreck what you're talkin about the discovery of the Indianapolis wreck

Overall, not a terrible video and the USS Indianapolis story deserves the coverage in honor of the sacrifice of her crew, but a lot of inaccuracies that others have mentioned involved. Whoever was looking at the footage should be more careful. Anyone else catch the USS Enterprise CVN 65 at the 2: 06 mark? No reason for it to be in this video unless they thought it was USS Enterprise CV 6 footage. Clean it up please History. Your credibility takes a pounding on easy mistakes like this.

This thing was a historical, famous mystery, and literally right when the found it my 8th grade class had to pick something to do a project. So two friends and I just spent a decent portion of 8th grade making a clearly student made documentary on this ship just thinking it was cool our state had a well known ship in WW2. We had no idea the magnitude of it. Thanks to the project though, I am now decently well versed on this infamous ship/topic

The wreck of the Indianapolis was discovered 18, 000 feet below the Philippine Sea. The deepest shipwreck found so far was the destroyer escort Samuel Roberts at 22, 900 feet below the surface of the Philippine Sea. The deepest part of the Philippine Sea is 34, 400 feet. Titanic, by comparison, lies 12, 000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

You know what was interesting about the Indianapolis and the I-58 is. both of them were at Iwo Jima. I-58 was in a position to strike the American fleet when they were recalled, the higher ups for the Japanese Command were surprised and shocked that I-58 had been able to get into position to even try for a shot at sinking a ship.

Due entirely to the Indianapolis carrying the atomic cores for the atom bombs, secrecy was the order of the day, there was no way they could break communications blackout. In addition even when Indianapolis failed to meet her schedule the Navy didn't send any help due to the communications blackout.

Funny how they don-t mention the 5 Sullivan brothers that died during and after the attack when they were eaten by sharks. The regulations changed about so many family members serving in the same unit/ship because of them. They all were from Waterloo, Iowa where they have a statue, etc about them.

So they found it. great. what did they learn? the underwater pictures used in this video are that of the titanic, not the Indy. (note the crows nest towards the end of the clip) Did the damage prove the Capt was not negligent? This mystery is not solved - not with this vid anyway
reply

Oh, c'mon! One of the clips in this video (at 2: 06) is of the island of the nuclear carrier, the USS Enterprise (CVN-65, that wasn't built till long after WWII was over. Then the rescue plane shown at 4: 21, isn't even an American PV-1 Ventura plane, it's a British Warplane.

My father-in-law and my uncle were both in different ships that were destroyed in WWII, but thankfully they both survived. My uncle never could tell the details of that terrible event. My heart goes out to the families of these brave men.

We had a very similar incident here in Australia in 1941 when a disguised German cruiser sank HMAS Sydney off the coast of West Australia in Nov 1941. All 645 hands were lost - not even one survivor. The wreck was not located until 2008.

They ( sailors) were misinformed to make alot of noise to scare the sharks. that, as we know now, has the opposite effect. Some of the sailors lost it and started hallucinating swimming away from the rest. never to be seen again
reply

You cannot really close the books on this travesty without calling to task those officers who refused destroyer escort and those who wrongly charged and convicted the captain of the Indianapolis
reply

He was denied an escort, and then court marshalled when it was torpedoed! Absolutely disgusting! People in Naval courts failed terrible. So sad he was already dead by the time he was exonerated.
reply

Hashimoto was not called in to testify in McVeigh's defense, he was called in to testify for the prosecution. His testimony, however, helped the defense more than the Navy liked.
reply

it's a shame that Captain McVay is blamed for the sinking of his vessel even tho he requested support for the destroyer escort that could have saved the vessel was denied.

2. 9K when will all get the - that all who finds my past remains will never wild the sword - power of all is inside yourselves & not in any achient text or treasures -
reply

-for all their strength and speed, the Japanese submarines exist in a world built on rules. That is why they can never be as fast or strong as you, Neo-
reply

Hashimoto was called as a witness for the PROSECUTION, not in McVay-s defense. When his testimony supported McVay-s case, it was summarily ignored.
