The Ottoman Empire began in the 13th century with Osman the 1st. Gaining land and power the Ottomans, named after Osman via anglicization and some language hopping, would soon conquer the ancient city of Constantinople. This would bring about an influx of Greek and Roman culture that was the backbone of the Byzantines. The Ottoman Empire reached far and wide, and it was reflected everywhere in the empire, even the Imperial Harem. The harems of the Ottoman Empire. A subject that while evoking images of scantily dressed nubile young women, also deals with power, prestige, war, tradition, and ultimately the fate of an empire. Historical records from the west from the time of the Ottomans are skewed and biased, often inaccurate as few Europeans ever had firsthand experience with the Sultans harem. Actually, that isnt quite true, there was any number of Europeans, Africans, and Eurasians that were very involved with the Imperial Harem, although rarely was this a willing and mutually beneficial arrangement. The Ottoman Empire was a very inclusive, yet traditional, place

All those girls were enslaved Christian girls. It's horrible, it was the same with the janissaries, the crack Ottoman soldiers. These were once Christian children forcibly removed from their parents and indoctrinated against Christianity. A lot of people Don't even know that the whole of Turkey and the Middle East was once Christian.

Christian world that is the world want to live in, a free pirate christian world with adventures of life on brotherhood and love and not this kind of mutilation, slavery, propecies that support war, quaran can be readed like a law book you can use loopholes when a new text has higher purpose than older text so it's method of manipulation
reply

The trick to having slaves is to make them believe they are free. America land of the deceived and home of the slave. There's no money a federal reserve note is an evidence of debt. Debt is another word for slavery. I suppose ignorance is bliss.

Thank you for showing these disgusting facts of the most hated and despised empire in history. We, the people from the countries that were once part of this shithole, hate every nano second from our history in the Ottoman Empire.

Did Harem women have smooth Punani or hairy? This is the real mystery here folks! One has to remember it was extremely hot at times in this part of the world, so a smooth Punani would be logical!
reply

It also deals with power, prestige, war, tradition and the fate of an empire.
But we WILL get back to those images of scantily clad nubile young women though, right? RIGHT!

On a related note - Just bought White Gold by Giles Milton, about white slaves in the middle east. etc. This whole topic is something I know very little about - cant wait to read it!

Basically, nothing has changed even after feminism. Modern women throw themselves at the top 20% of men, and those men enjoy readily available supplies of the harem as a result.
reply

Nothing new. this has been happening since ages & is happening now too with affluent people. Why single out the Ottoman kings when English kings & nobles sired so many bastards
reply

a brutal, savage, and backward culture. immune to reform and eternally benighted. modern saudi arabia is no different than 14th century bagdad or 15th century istanbul
reply

You gloss over the women who were taken as slaves and did not want to follow the religion, how many of them ended up back in the slave market or were just killed?
reply

This is rather confusing - at 3: 40-3: 47, you mention princesses that were valued because they could marry a princess? How did that work?
reply

the Ottoman empire stable? The Greeks by themselves engaged in more than 70 uprisings from the Fall of Constantinople to their independence.
reply

No matter what you think about our current civilization, its undeniable that we are far more fortunate compared to those who came before us.
reply

Ask a Turkish man today, he will continue to say he has many women.
But when someone looks at his wife, he gets jealous. Such low morals.

reply

The Ottoman Empire was the biggest slave-trading empire ever to exist, and took many white slaves, including white women to their harems.
reply

so the fdaughters have higher possition than their mothers but less than their grand mother what a weird system
reply

Could you do one about Roman senators under the emperors? It's often oversimplified to 'They kowtowed to the emperor'.
reply

Gee if the tradition of harems continued in the west we would all be richer and happier. So what happened?
reply

George Clooney, Leornardo Di Caprio, Middle East royalties would be VIPs if that did still exist today.
