Can you name the key this piece of music is in? This music theory lesson explains how to look at a short extract of music and figure out the key without hearing it. This types of exercises are often met in theory exams, where you are given a melody and have to name the key, but it's also a good thing for any musician to be able to do. This video will help build your confidence. 0:31 - Music with no key signature 2:49 - Complications with missing notes 8:37 - Confirming the key by ear Lucas: Im sorry but I didnt catch where you justified that it cant be Ab major instead of Db major. At 6:58 you question why couldnt the melody be in Ab major given the fact that it sort of -finishes-, at least that phrase, with Eb instead of the tonic for Db. But after that you go on talking about how we dont actually know what happens afterwards, in the etcetera. And after that you conclude that the melody could not be in Ab major because if it had a G it would have to be natural and not flat, which is correct but there are no Gs so I dont see where you draw your conclusion from.
So, either what you said earlier about how the first notes form the tonic chord of Db and the fact that we later have that ascending bit from the dominant into the octave, to fall back into the tonic, is justification enough. Which seems not very technical to me if we are only to tell the key from reading the sheet since, again the difference lies within the G, whether its natural or not. Or Im missing something from the lesson.
Great analysis btw! Im loving these test videos, learning a lot from them. :)
