Improve your music writing and harmony with these three chromatic chord alteration tricks. Many composers, arrangers, and improvisers get fed up with being stuck using the same basic chords all the time. This music composition lesson gives examples of how to make chromatic alterations to chords in order to make the harmony sound more varied and more colourful, as well as less predictable. Many musicians get stuck using the basic diatonic chords (the chords that belong to the key) and are desperate to venture into more interesting options. One way to do that is to use chromatic chords. Another solution is to use chromatically altered chords e.g. take a chord that should be major in a given key and change it to minor or augmented. As long as the chord progression is properly considered this does so much to add colour. Watch this music composition lesson to find out more. to chromatic chord alterations 0:34 - Chromatic mediants 2:19 - Augmented chords 4:36 - Secondary dominants
