As a long time student of linguistics as it crosses different languages (except mathematics in my case) this was one of my favourite examples. And of course, oratorios were operas for use in lent, so this is operatic in the same way that, later, Mozart's music was. There is no other opera that opens with such verve, and the complexties you outline generate this enormous energy, so much so that synesthesia almost inevitable\y leads one to a baroque dome. Bach of course has this same skill where in his secular music too there are strong visual contexts even without words. Thank you for this short introduction. I am no longer a researcher but as with all professions, what one has done lingers into late life (which is where I am, and music was not my profession but remains one of the most important components of my life). Professional musician friends don't like this kind of discussion! ('Eh? What on earth are you talking about?')

Great stuff as usual. Do you have videos on the voice as an instrument and how to relate it to other instruments? It could be that voice is just another instrument and doesn't need special treatment and the usual principles apply, but I would love to know the nitty gritty if not. How to align certain words with the beat, and so on.

Thank you so much for going into details of how to appreciate music. As a Christian whose favorite art period is Baroque and a dancer, can you picture my emotions when listening to this video--- in the midest of this postmodern world? Beauty is sacred, it is a pattern, it is spiritual, it is a movement, a movement of Grace.

I used to think that the Hallelujah Chorus was all there was to Messiah. Then I got a CD of the entire oratorio and I loved it so much I couldn't listen to anything else for months. I don't believe it has an equal in the history of music, although I do regard Bach as the intellectual superior to Handel.

I adore Messiah, and this is such a fantastic uplifting chorus to sing as well as listen to! thank you for these insights as to how Handel achieves this (I do love a hemiola). Handel is a genius - absolutely my Desert Island composer.

Hi trust you well. Thank you for your well constructive lessons. Just a side note. I would like to do my trinity college teachers licentiate. Do you know of any online resources or what books would be best to purchase. Thanks in advance.

I often wonder if people like Handel were aware of how great their work was, or had any idea of the legacy they would leave behind. I wonder how he, and other great people felt about this subject.

Amazing, I'm so glad to see some videos on Handel, one of my favourite composers and one of the greatest in history, so prolific and of insane high quality, he was a great man truly.

That-s s great insight into some of the less obvious parts of Handel-s word painting. But the little kid in me just loves the really obvious stuff like -the cro-o-o-ked straight- in Ev-ry valley. -
