The current ruling ontology denies any possibility of a social causation of mental illness. The chemico-biologization of mental illness is of course strictly commensurate with its depoliticization. Considering mental illness an individual chemico-biological problem has enormous benefits for capitalism. First, it reinforces Capital s drive towards atomistic individualization (you are sick because of your brain chemistry. Second, it provides an enormously lucrative market in which multinational pharmaceutical companies can peddle their pharmaceuticals (we can cure you with our SSRls. It goes without saying that all mental illnesses are neurologically instantiated, but this says nothing about their causation. If it is true, for instance, that depression is constituted by low serotonin levels, what still needs to be explained is why particular individuals have low levels of serotonin. This requires a social and political explanation; and the task of repoliticizing mental illness is an urgent one if the left wants to challenge capitalist realism.

The chemical imbalance Theory is only partially right. let me explain.
We could say that depression is caused from a lack of certain chemicals, but I think it s better off seen from a philosophical perspective rather than a purely scientific one.
You could say that one person is depressed because he/she witnessed some awful things in his/her life, but another could say it s because of a chemical imbalance. I believe they both play a role and one effects the other. which is why the combination of therapy with meds(even psychedelics alone) tend to work best in treating it.
But at the heart of it all, it s a problem with perspective. Acknowledging the wrong things and not coming to grips and accepting certain things too. But if we can find ways to shift our perspective to focus or unfocus on certain things, good, bad or neutral, like through meditation or psychedelics, we can cure depression. It s a perspective problem essentially.

Without watching I can already tell they will only focus on SSRI's and not MAO-inhibitors, all classes of dopamine or endorphin boosters, psychedelics, dissociatives, salvia, Lions mane, etc. (Every single one of those have studies and/or many case studies where they help against depression) And let's also not forget that depression is very clearly correlated with negative life-events/a lack of meaning in someone's life; good food, sleep, a social life, productive hobby's, being in nature, etc. can also be called 'antidepressants'.

Sertraline saved my life, do not let any perceived stigma for antidepressants stop you from getting help. Also, give them time. I would try sertraline for a month or so, feel alright again, so I'd stop taking them; only to fall back into depression. For me at least, it's a treatment that takes a long time to truly bed in and help you tackle the core issue that's causing the depression, or make the changes you need that were prevented before because of the weight of the illness.

The more Ted videos I see the more worthless I think they are. In that this video makes no mention of how an individual's situation plays a part that the person can control eventually or at least recognize how their situation is causing their depression, this video reaffirms the person is helpless. The fact that any treatment of depression of any efficacy is so out of reach for so many people, is itself depressing.

Taking these medications MUST always be accompanied by close monitoring to make sure they are not causing other serious issues. All medications come with risks. It doesn't mean they're a bad medication, but for some people this can happen. Always make the doctor aware if this happens. If it's really bad then get thee to the emergency room. Don't wait. The doctor can try another and then monitor CLOSELY.

Many of these medications do work. But they're not all SSRIs. Some also Dopamine. My final CORRECT diagnosis was Bipolar 2 Disorder. Taking Lithium was a massive revelation. I remember the moment it clicked My God! This is what normal feels like. I had never connected with the world like this in my ENTIRE life! For some people like me, medication is a God send.

Do not rely on antidepressants alone without accompanying Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Long term use of antidepressants actually has a negative effect on the efficiency of neurotransmitters in your brain. Antidepressants and CBT are complimentary and used together hold a much better chance of succeeding in helping to successfully manage depression.
