Rube Waddell was a Major League Baseball pitcher who was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946. But Waddell's impressive athleticism wasn't the only thing that made him fascinating. For example, during professional games, if a firetruck went by Waddell would immediately leave the field and chase after it. So what else made Waddell stand out? Find out as we explore this unique character.

Several players of the day had the nickname Rube and it meant (roughly) that he was a simple, unintelligent farmboy - a dunce. They were the type that were the butt of jokes and the nickname was dead on for a guy like Waddell. There were stories later in his career where opposing home teams paid fire trucks to pass by the ballpark on the days he was pitching until he left to follow them, so irresistible was the thought of chasing a fire.

You guys do a great job. But to small points, throwing the ball at batters to get them out was made against the rules in 1864 its 1864 so official rules took a long time to become fully excepted with it still being legal in some leagues until the start of the American League in 1901. Many of the statistics cited are disputed but while exaggerated still a good representation of the mans talent.

He actually was in the habit of chasing firetrucks with the intent of helping fight the fire. Times were different back then and small town people would do stuff like that. He was probably autistic on some level, but also good hearted, and an absolute baseball beast pitcher. Alot of old timers pick for best lefty GOAT. Imagine him today, poor guy.

This actually started off pretty good but theres one comically hysterical error in this video: Waddell threw rocks at CROWS eating seeds that farmers planted, not COWS. Im reading Alan H. Levys book on Waddell and the first chapter is actually titled Throwing Rocks at Crows. Talk about one letter throwing off an entire story! HAHAHAHAHA!

To say his nickname would be unacceptable in modern era is a pretentious and fairly ignorant point of view. Rube could be short for Ruby or Ruben what does it matter. Like everyone has a nickname and if you dont your probably extremely BORING PERSON.

I dont like how you make it seem like he chased fire trucks like a dog chases cars. He was simply trying to go with the firemen to help with whatever they were going to do. He wasn't chasing fire trucks. He was following them to help.

Narrator: The College offered him free tuition. They also offered him free room and board, 1 $ per game and free tobacco.
Also narrator: Those THREE things sounded great to Rube.

Youd still get away with nicknaming someone rube today. After all its a derogatory remark aimed mostly at white folks if Im not mistaken, and its still ok by societys standards to use disparaging terms against them.

Can you imagine how pissed the other teams must have gotten when this guy, who you could literally distract with a puppy, clears the field of defense and proceeds to strike out the side? Who is Cy Young anyways.

what a freaking interesting person. he definitely danced to beat of a different drummer and just enjoyed life. a glorious sense of adventure. he is the definition of carpe diem. he lived his life seizing the day!

The Man, The Myth, The Legend! He loved animals, kids, and always wanted to help people! Connie Mack loved him! Listen to the profiles in eccentricity podcast to hear the whole story!

I live in prospect a small town in Pennsylvania whear rube grew up his house is still hear but it's abandoned I wish someone would buy it and make it into a museum about him

Guy had slight autism, you don't have to repeat the same thing about firetrucks every 30 seconds. He was a badass but the video could have been a lot better: /

Ive heard all of rube Waddells stories before but the way you tell it. Specifically at the end when telling about him saving lives, gives me chills.

I have read about Rube Waddell, which is why I decided to watch this video. After reading about him, he became one of my favorite players of all time.
reply

whoa whoa whoa, this man had an obvious mental disability and still managed to play baseball at a professional level. How dare you call him tragic.
reply

I sure wish baseball had some characters like this still. It's become so organized that it's boring. Rube, is my favorite player of all time.
reply

The craziest part of this is when he courted, married and became separated from Mae Wynn Skinner of Lynn, Massachusetts. That blew my mind.

If some pitcher called his entire defense off the field in the middle of an inning today the benches would clear and hands would be thrown.
reply

Absolutely well done, He really was the 1st baseball star who's name, before Ruth's had stadiums built due to his presence in the game.
