Mr. Ed s talking was not movie magic, the hoofed beast could make rudimentary words, used to scare the actors sometimes.
That horse had a real problem with the Irish, and women s rights.
Who hasn t seen the old black and white where Bamboo Harvester was in stable yelling out the word Ireland! while smashing the ever loving hell out of a pumpkin?
Not so good times, but that was his equine Kramer moment. He would also yell the word Gams at the female actors who would get too close, say the word Vote and bite their fingers while, of course stamping his hooves as they would scream in shock and pain If not that he would try to grab their hair, and use the leverage to slam their face into whatever was close.
My point was just to say that knowing your heroes can ruin them for you.

Why don't you talk about early television before cable, VCR's and the like.
You had two shots at seeing your TV show. The original show, then 26 weeks later as a rerun. If you missed it, YOU MISSED IT! You'd have to wait for years for the show to enter syndication before they'd air the episodes again.
That's why television was such a thing back then, and why you had to watch the shows as they aired.
Truthfully, digital tech these days with video on demand would have been a crazy idea back then.

Hi Producers, I love your stuff. You just asked for ideas 0: 25 and here's mine.
I was a kid when Bewitched was on and they had an episode where one of the characters dosed another character with LSD without their knowledge or consent, and wackiness ensued!
It was set in an insane asylum or a hospital or some such. I swear it's the truth. Thank you!

I grew up watching this show, and I'm only 25! My dad showed us the shows from his childhood like the Munsters, Ed the talking horse, the monkees, and the Beverly hillbillies. Except, he forgot to mention that the shows were from 50ish years ago so I ended up going to school and being so confused why the other kids had no clue what I was talking about.

9: 44 and 4: 58 I played the character Tiny Tim, who originated on Charles Dicken's novella A Christmas Carol and was also in the featurette Mickey's Christmas Carol.
I dressed up like Tiny Tim, used a mop as a crunch, and did an improvised comedy set for a christmas show at the assisted living facility I worked for.

I watched Mr. Ed on Nick at Nite, a programming block on Nickelodeon that started in July 1, 1985, a little over a month before I started kindergarten.
Nick at Nite was such a great deal as it was the only avenue to watch those classic shows at the time.
Mr. Ed and Get Smart were my favorite on Nick at Nite.

Alan Young and his wife were guests at my aunt and uncle s wedding and my mom being a big fan of the show (I was unable to attend) had to ask her how that the horse talked. As mentioned, the horse was first made to talk by movie magic with hidden wires but eventually knew what to do and no wire was required

Just a side note, Van Halen used the no brown M&M clause to gauge just how much attention the crew was paying to their contract requirements. They figured if they didn't pay attention to something as simple as no brown M&Ms, they couldn't trust them on any staging or pyrotechnics and would check it themselves.

5: 34 I was always told they used electric shocks to get his lips to move.
Those were the days before the internet. when your elders constantly made up stories that could not reasonably be verified as true or false.
There is no comparison to the amount of dishonesty today as there was in the past!

It's not strange at all. That's more than just a stretch. Someone jammed peanut butter in his mouth and he moved his mouth around like he was talking. The thing we should really be talking about is how Hollywood turned a horse into a gassy diabetic.

I would get up extra early to deliver newspapers when I was 12 years old (wanted to save for a horse) so I could come home to watch Mr. Ed before school. No I never got a horse we were very poor. LOVE HORSES!

The thing you called a whip resembling a fly switch isn't a whip. It's called a crop and yes it is basically just a leather fly swatter you hit the horse's rear with while riding.

With all the horrible stories I hear about animals being mistreated on set, it was really nice to hear Harvester was treated very well and was even a professional on set.

The m&m thing is wildly misunderstood. It was a test to see if the venue actually read the tech rider, if there was brown m&ms they knew that it was going to be a rough show
