What If Earth Had a Large Elliptical Orbit?

What if Earth's orbit ventured as far from the Sun as Pluto, and got as close to it as Venus? Would the Sun burn the planet to a crisp at the closest encounter? How cold would it get at the farthest point away from our star? Would humans be able to survive such extreme changes in temperature? And if we could, what are the chances that Earth would follow this orbit safely through space without crashing into another planet?

I'm impressed how many comments are just about the other 'What If' scenario suggestions instead of actually correctness of this one. First of all, planets with elliptical orbits orbit the star in one of the focuses instead of the center of the ellipse like it is shown in the video. Secondly, Venus is indeed in the edge of the habitable zone and is so hot due to its atmosphere. Given the laws of Kepler we would travel through the hot part of the orbit quite fast in compare to the cold part. While being far from the sun, earth's atmosphere would help to retain the heat. We, humans, could add more greenhouse gasses to keep it warm as well or move underground, hence it's not certain death either. Keeping our wildlife, plants and growing enough food to keep so big population is a whole other story.

The slight shift and we wouldn't be able to survive on this planet. Yet some people still think there is no intelligent Designer. That there is no God. That all of this is a result of nothing exploding. Nothing. Absolutely nothing exploding. They think that nothing was able to just decide, -Well, I'm gonna make this planet right here so that people can live on it. -
Last time I checked nothing is nothing and cannot do anything at all.
Nothing cannot produce something.

There was a planet which was discovered in 2013. It was initially thought to be a rogue planet, just wandering in space without orbiting around any star. But Later, it was found out that the planet -was- revolving around a Star. The distance between them was so massive, that it tricked scientists into believing that it was a rogue planet. The distance between the planet and the star was actually 1 Trillion Kilometers, in this distance, our 3 solar systems could fit.

In such a scenario, the earth wouldnt heat up to 460 degrees. It's not because Venus is that hot that it would be the same on earth. Same goes for the cold temperatures, the earth has a molten core that will give still a tiny bit of warmth in absence of a closeby sun. I guess the temperature would vary between +100 and -50 or something like that)

What if: waiting for been zero water the earth world
Sun solar system: a San what the human the moon earth hope really stop black hole
Moon: No stop sun energy with to next time points explained
Earth: leave Quit nasa a sab started rocket space speed cool

Regarding when the earth is closer to the sun, what about the oceans evaporating and causing a cloud around the earth reflecting the suns rays. And what about the pull of other plants as we move further away? This video was quickly put together for profit.

No need to tension much for the destruction of earth. Bcoz

Bcoz we will be dead in about 100 years at least.

What if the Earth had no tilt, and was always half-way between the closest it ever is, and the furthest it ever is? Orbiting speed and rotation speed and direction would be unchanged.
reply

Why such an extreme orbit? Obviously, taking Earth out of the habitable zone would kill most life. Try something different like increasing the Earth's tilt by about 5 degrees.
reply

Venus and mars are actually in the habitable zone but venus's atmosphere is too thick and mars's is too thin. But if Earth was in those orbits, it would be fine
reply

You made a mistake if earth goes to venus orbit doesnt mean tha the earth will have the same temperature because has thicker atmosphere tha earth

I have a character whose homeworld has a very elliptical orbit, and they thus have cryokinesis and extreme cold resistance.
reply

um earth wont reach temperature of venus and the ice bars wont all melt because earth does not have that much carbondioxide

So are u telling me that when its cold we go farther away from the sun and when its hot were going closer to the sun?

After watching what if videos i always dream of something related to space and its like i m watching a movie----

But is mars orbit enough near to the hatibitable zone for earth to survive there and what if we are in mars orbit?
reply

What if: even the slightest shift on the earth's orbit will change that.
