Most of us don't get the recommended eight hours of sleep a night. But what if you went a whole week without sleeping? What would happen to your body? And how quickly would you start to hallucinate without sleep?

Not getting enough sleep for a week, or longer, can have serious negative effects on your health, both physically and mentally. Prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to a host of physical symptoms, such as fatigue, irritability, decreased cognitive function and impaired motor skills. It can also have serious effects on your mental health, leading to depression, anxiety and an increased risk of developing a mental disorder.
A lack of sleep can also affect your immune system, making you more susceptible to illness, and can also increase your risk of developing chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations, confusion, and paranoia, and in severe cases, it can lead to a condition known as delirium which is characterized by confusion, disorientation, and hallucinations.
It's important to note that while humans can survive for short periods of time without sleep, chronic sleep deprivation can have severe consequences, and it's crucial to maintain a healthy sleep schedule to ensure overall well-being.

I have literally gone 72 plus hours with no sleep against my will. So whatever is said here. Juat note you can live it just sucks. and you kind of fall in and out of reality and you make poor choices because you can't literally think straight and if you keep going too long you will have a hard time getting to sleep even if dead tired. so I would suggest just sleeping normally if you can. 7 hours at best.

As someone who's actually gone several entire weeks (non-consecutive, obviously) without a single second of sleep during amphetamine addiction; I can heartily recommend you don't try to pass the three-day-mark. Every single time, without fail, that's when the hallucinations started. They got progressively worse over the next days, but just three was enough to kick it off. Horrifying shit.

I don't know my sleep schedule is messed up and I have these moments where I don't recognize myself falling asleep and as soon as I close my eyes I start dreaming hearing sounds it almost feels real as if someone is talking to me until it gets over and I realize it wasn't real it's like recalling incidents that never happened more like creating real life scenarios

I go 50 hours without sleep around once every other month or so. By that point, my entire body hurts and I cease caring about anything at all. Mentally, I am around like %10 of my rested state. I can do 35 hours easily enough, but that's usually when I call it quits. Gaming will do that. Sometimes, you just can't bring yourself to stop!

i once went 3 days without sleep during a manic episode. i was hallucinating after 48 hours and on the third day, i only remember thinking i had died and moved on into the afterlife. everything else is a blur. the crash afterward required that i be hospitalized.

I have been awake for as many as 4 consecutive days. It is not fun. I was deployed to Iraq in 2003 and was up for approximately 90 hours. During the final hours before I finally crashed, I was hallucinating and seeing people who weren't actually there.

This is precisely why I will never understand how on earth med students and hospital doctors are okay (especially for such a high-focus job.
Ironic af that frequent sleep deprivation is a requirement for these people.

Sorry, don't believe some of these commenters stating they've stayed up this long, and nothing happens. Dozing and quick naps count as a form of sleep. Only getting 3hrs of sleep a night, doesn't equal staying up 24/7. -

In Germany someone did this experiment with supervision of a doctor and had weird hallucinations, as if the dream world swept in our world, but he managed to do it and was fine after a day and a half of sleep.

Wow so first of all is this person sane? I'm afraid something is wrong when they think of going an extended awake all-the-time. No that doesn't sound intelligent. That's when you let them know.

I did 54 hours without sleep when I was 15 years old. I'm not sure how I did it because I'm now 25 years old and cannot stay up longer than 18hrs without sleep - Thanks for the awesome video

All of these -conditions- and -side effects- are way too exaggerated. I've been without sleep for a week. All it did was make me feel weaker, nothing else.
