But what if they got even bigger? Let-s go up the planetary size chart and see what kind of chaos doubling the size of every planet would make. What would it be like to live on a super-Earth? How big would Jupiter need to get to become a star? And would Pluto finally regain its planetary status? Transcript and source

If all the planets in our solar system were to suddenly double in size, it would have significant effects on the overall stability of the solar system and the ability of life to exist on those planets.
The increased size would lead to an increase in gravity, which would make it difficult for life to survive on the surface of these planets, and would make it difficult for spacecraft to land and take off.
The increased size of the gas giants like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune would make them become brown dwarfs, which are not massive enough to sustain the nuclear fusion that would make them into stars.
The orbits of the planets would be greatly affected, as the gravitational pull of these larger planets would be much stronger, which would cause the orbits of other planets to change. This could lead to destabilization of the solar system, and could potentially cause the planets to collide or be ejected from the solar system.
The sun's gravitational pull on the planets would also be affected, which could lead to a change in the overall temperature and climate of the solar system.
Overall, it is unlikely that such a change would be possible and if it were, it would have catastrophic effects on the stability and habitability of the solar system.

If mass remains the same, gravity is cut in half as the distance between the centers doubled. But let's say that mass increased proportional to size. Square cube law states that if an object is double it's size, if it is the same density, it's mass would increase by 8 times. If this happened earth would be 8 times as massive if it's size doubled. But while the Rocky planets of the solar system becomes 8 times as massive, as their density would remain the same, gas planets are confusing. Neptune and Uranus doubled in size would have be have to be equivalent in mass to saturn if their radius doubled, but Jupiter is just about as big as it could be. A planet 8 times Jupiter's mass would just be more dense than Jupiter but be around the same radii. If Jupiter or Saturn's radii truly doubled, at that point, we'd be entering brown dwarf or small star territory

Well if Jupiter doubled in size- (my prediction before the episode starts) Jupiter becomes a sun.
But are we talking about doubling in mass? Can something become bigger but still have the same amount of mass?
Like a planet double in size but still be the same density as it-s original size?

Even if you made the Earth 0. 001% bigger, the shift in diameter would likely destabilise all human constructs, causing them to collapse and kill tens of millions to hundreds of millions of people. All out architecture would disappear in an instant, destroying modern society world-wide.

On trouble shows you You be my gotta go 12 the star in the sun It will be a possible or the pregnant kid has a boom boom on on the planet off the old goby dead we all will be passed away for better pop a potty cannot handle the drink on a planet we know in love

When you double the radius of earth you would be 8 times heavier instead of 2 times what the video mentioned. If you double the radius the volume goes times 8 and the mass of the earth would also be times 8 which makes you 8 times heavier.

Very Good Video - I wonder what is the green layer above the earth? Is that they call ozone ore somthing? Not another planet have this i notice - I think this is the thing do the life to life.

Earth's gravity would double in strength and smash us onto the surface. Also Jupiter would need to be over 10 times it's size, Brown Dwarfs are 8x larger that Jupiter, and they are failed stars.

If Mars doubled its size it would be so close to having life because:
Mass: 0. 88x Earth (0. 11x8=0. 88)
Radius: 1x Earth (0. 50x2=1)
So Mars would be as similar as Venus is

reply

now im confused. thought you said doubling the radius would make them 8 times more massive but then you say gravity would only be 2 times stronger
reply

Are we doubbeling the mass or the radius now? in the beginning you said with double the radius the mass would be x8 but wed go from 75 kg to 150?
reply

2: 27 Mercury
3: 04 Venus
3: 46 Earth
4: 44 Mars
5: 28 Jupiter
6: 58 Saturn
7: 33 Uranus
8: 06 Neptune
8: 36 Pluto

reply

iIf Jupiter be even 60 time bigger in mass it will be same size as now. The Saturn too only can grow to Jupiter size and no more.
reply

Give Jupiter 8 times more mass will NOT double its size. If you want to do a video about science, please be more scientifically accurate.

The ending of WHAT IF saying about the Sun being large enough to swallow earth will happen in about 5. 8 billion years
reply

If I doubled in size with the planet, would my extra volume extend upwards? Would my bones double as well? Hm.
reply

Doubling the earth could be good because it could lead to more resources. Maybe we could even enter a new era.
reply

In other words, everyone would be happy if this were to happen since nothing really bad happens to anyone.
