Is 34 too young to start playing the cello and get to a point of sounding good and enjoying the instrument? It's my absolute favorite instrument, but my school did not have an orchestra program so I played bass clarinet instead. Sadly, high school killed my drive and willingness to move on as a musician by forcing everyone to participate in marching band. I know some people love it, but I hated being part of it. I picked up pflugelhorn for matching band and to participate in the jazz band, but I still regret to this day that I didn't have an opportunity to learn the cello.

what year cello did you connect with the most? when will be the last time you will weep while playing cello?
Hypothetically speaking, will the situation be playing to someone you currently love or have loved or will love? (Not assuming your relationship status)
If there is one piece of artwork you can have in the background along with your sonata what would be?
when piece of music would you play to the love of your life?

My very first symphonic concert experience was Yo Yo Ma. My next door neighbors took me to see him when I was maybe 11, and he was about 17. They said he would be a legend. They were right. Never forgot that concert. Such a beautiful instrument, and he is the king and the best ambassador for it. My personal favorite album of his is the collaboration between he and Bobby McFerrin. Legendary, both of them!

Omg thank you for telling me about your tuning struggles and constantly having to adjust to the positions on the fingerboard. I thought I would be the only one who would grow up having trouble with that but it-s comforting to know that it-s ok to have that struggle even as a professional in the future

-Why do they always play suite no. 1 in every movie? -
Most musicians: -I know right. That piece is so overplayed, there are many other pieces that are better and more impressive-
Yo-Yo Ma: -Because that piece is amazing-

Yo-Yo Ma was my dads friend he is such a sweetheart, makes the music shine through the instrument and it gains a whole new meaning
Unfortunately my dad passed away but he has said many great things about him.

Thank you Maestro Ma. I played the cello growing up and have so many wonderful memories. My teacher, Joseph Benstock, described learning to bow the cello as learning how to breath. It all gets down to basics.

I'm going to nerd out and just say that he's as relevant now as he was 20 plus years ago but his Cello skills isn't the only thing that's been sharpened. happy to see he has some humor to explain this---

this was so inspiring and uplifting, and I know nothing about cellos or classical music in general! this man has such a way with words I just might go and look for tickets for cello concerts
