Mineralogist Answers Gemstone Questions From Twitter Tech Support WIRED

Gabriela Farfan, the Smithsonian's curator of gems and minerals, answers the internet's burning questions about gemstones. Are all minerals crystals? How are diamonds cut? How do geodes form? Is the Hope Diamond actually cursed? This rock and mineral expert answers all these questions and more. The Mohs Hardness Scale is not a logarithmic scale. I was a bit confused when she claimed that (I took a materials science course in my engineering undergrad, looked it up and Wikipedia seems to agree with me. It is purely qualitative in a sense that it compares two materials, and when one gets scratched by the other, it gets assigned an arbitrary lower number. Not only is it not logarithmic, but it is not even quantitative.
I guess she mixed that property up with another scale, although her examples of talk being one and diamond 10 on Mohs scale do hold true.

There's lots of things the gem industry won't tell you though.
Like, diamonds aren't that rare, and also that the market is full of synthetics. Unlike many synthetic gems, where the color and flaws/inclusions are the way to tell a stone is genuine or not, diamonds (especially smallish ones) occur flawlessly with enough frequency that there's no way to tell. So people get talked into spending a fortune for a synthetic stone with a grossly inflated value. The diamond industry is a massive scam.
Instead, spend your money on the literally thousands of other, more interesting and more beautifully unique stones out there, that aren't being controlled by an unethical mafia who's least offensive transgressions involve market manipulation.

I'm glad that she touched on blood diamonds ethics, i think an even better mineral ethics opportunity would be when discussing the minerals of our smartphones and electric vehicles and how the western colonialism in the global south relies on destabilizing the regions where we get all these minerals (especially like Sudan and Congo in Africa) and the humanitarian crisis of these areas!

On Blood Diamonds - good job avoiding talking about all the child slavery! You keep it so clean and clinical, not wanting to dwell on the kids that get their hands cut off for being too slow, their fathers being murdered to keep them down, and all the horrors that people wanting little chunks of carbon for their wedding rings perpetuate.

Of the 118 known elements, only 80 of them have at least one stable nuclide and our cellphones use 65 of them. Dang. That's some complex tech I'm using to text my friends!
(I'm assuming cellphones don't use any of the radioactive ones unless there's a need for an old-school smoke detector in them; -)

Hello, I m a geologist. Minerals are awesome and some of them can t even be found on earth using AI some undiscovered but possible mineral structures have been theorized, and some are only found in meteorites that form under conditions not found on Earth.

Question: What wavelength (nanometer) of UV is that? Will UVA, B and C all do that to the stones? Also, I don't usually comment on the superficial but this lady has really nice nails. Great informative video as well. Wins all around.

Very interesting. I wish she would have covered star sapphires, although the process is similar to turquoise. I have my mom s Linde ring. She bought it in 1957. My most treasured possession. I think there are seven colors.

Excellent video. I would assume uncertified diamonds are confiscated by us CBP not TSA. TSA simply does flight security screening. US Customs does verification of goods coming into the country.

Who else was obsessed with minerals as a kid? I had books on them and several minerals I had bought at stores. On occasion I would take a pickax to rocks I found, though I usually just found quartz.

I've never thought about gems and minerals as much as I just did, but it was a lot of fun: D Now I can almost understand why Geologists and such are so fond of their little shiny rocks.

I would watch 10 more episodes of her talking about gems! They are so pretty to look at, but learning more of the science behind how they are formed was really interesting!

Perhaps all those people who lost their money after buying the Hope diamond are just bad with money. I mean, they did buy a useless mineral chunk for way too much money.

those diamonds are too big and too big in energy, they probably oppressed the owners' energies resulting in bad luck since energy and luck are two sides of the same coin

Love these episodes where the expert is in a field I'd never think to care about, but is so knowledgeable and passionate that I'm loving it.

The casting producer doesn't get enough credit. I don't think I've seen a person on this series I wouldn't want to listen to for hours.
