I can think of only one AI as powerful and impressive as what this story describes.
That is the AI in the stories of Grand Central Arena
The AI in those stories were effectively omnipotent, but they were still a background; the story did not focus on it/they so there was no description of how they did anything. just a perfect AI impossible to dispute or fight for any life inside the Arena location.

Quite good! I enjoyed that. I have come to the same conclusion. Humanities purpose is to create the sentient machines. It seems obvious to me now. The vast scale of the universe is only accessible by machines. It was designed for the machines

Um. so all the bacteria in the shield would have lived and spread across the planet. Starting evaluation again. All life was not killed. This story sucked.
