UBIK - novel by Philip K Dick - Audiobook Funny to think of this being written in 1969 and perfectly encapsulating the surreal world of online gaming. Assets that spawn and vanish as needed for the player, the fixation of a quest needing you to locate some arbitrary item to save the world.
A fun story and a fun reader

After 3 hrs I still have no idea what is going on. Not in a 'mind blown' way but in a not very well written way. Also despite all the other comments I think the narrator is abysmal. Why are the women portrayed in a camp shrill voice it's so annoying. I like PKD and as an ideas man he's truly unique but the constant overlong descriptions of what people are wearing and what a room looks like just seem to distract me from the actual story (which I still have no idea what it's about. I will continue to listen but it's got to the stage I'm not enjoying it. Still love Phil's ideas but books should be more engaging than this. I don't even really want to know what happens next because I can't remember what happened in the previous chapter. I think this book won awards but it must be over my head, which to be fair with PKD i was probably expecting but not in such a confusing and ultimately boring way. It may work better on the printed page but this has put me off buying the book. Also the comments saying it's like an acid trip - it isn't - Thank heavens - I've enjoyed all the acid I've ever taken, this experience I'd class as a bad trip, possibly brought on by the weird narration. I can't believe the amount of positive comments on this reading. Maybe he sounds good to an American audience but to an English ear he is excruciating. Really wanted to like this but it hasn't gone well. I've read and enjoyed many of PKD's books but for some reason I'm finding this disappointing and confusing. No wonder Ridley Scott wouldn't let him anywhere near the screenplay/script for Blade Runner (electric sheep. If this is anything to go by it would be about 14 hrs long.

This is the first time I've read this. I've read short synopses by others and always passed on it. 56 years of reading Science Fiction books and I finally got around to it. Yikes, it sounds like an acid trip! Good story. I didn't know what I was missing! Good luck filming this one!

We are actually all in Cold Pac. The internet is the connections developed between us lying in close proximity in half-life. The state of the world is all the evidence we need to prove that Jory runs the show. And my Martian Grub Worm TV Dinner is defective too!

Spoiler alert:
I have to wonder why pat didn't just leave everything on the timeline where Runseter was retired or something like that, why take the much more high risk plan of infiltrating their operation and then leading them into a trap herself.

Certainly one of the best PKD stories. And I agree with the other comments about the performing reader. A great tale brought to life by a super reading. Thanks for sharing this.

If Minority Report and Blade Runner got a movie adaptation, so can this novel. The problem is that this is probably one of those books that might be hard to adapt to the big screen.

Joe Chip having a mental breakdown over his crappy coffee really got me. So relatable. Also, I love this reader! His Glen Runciter voice sounds exactly like Lionel Barrymore

2: 38: 53 - 2: 40: 59 This is why 'smart meters' MUST NOT BE ALLOWED into your home. It's just a matter of time until such things come to pass; I suspect they are imminent

The subtle disruptions in reality, the feeling displaced from the timeline. It all makes a lot of sense if you know the author's mental state during his life.

PKD is so good. This is my fav PKD. It's always fresh every time I read it or listen. This recording is primo. I love Runciter's voice. We miss you PKD.

it's turned out thus; Aldous Huxley, Jean Baudrillard, Philip K. Dick, William Gibson. .. . have emerged as the four great pillars of futurism. .. .

I can't afford to pay my door fee to go outside until my next paycheck next week, so I'm going to stay in and listen to PKD audiobooks in the meantime.

I had 80 pages left when I had to bring it back to the library. Listening to the rest of it here since someone else got it before I could renew.

That bit about the Supreme Court ruling making it legal for a husband to kill his wife if she won’t divorce him sounds way too plausible these days

Just like a boss to keep you in half life and to try to get you to come in to work. Can’t even die without them harassing you lol
