I usually don’t have any criticisms of Asimov’s solutions, but the one in The Redhead is unsatisfying. It’s simple in way Asimov sets up his solutions, but there was a better one, in this case. At least to me. I was convinced this would be the solution, and when it wasn’t, I was surprised. Maybe that’s why I don’t like this solution.
SPOILER AHEAD
With the emphasis on Mrs. Anderson’s red hair, I figured that specifically the transformation thereof would be critical in the answer. My solution was this: Mrs. Anderson went inside, and sat someplace unobtrusive. Asimov emphasized the artificiality of the restaurant’s windows, fireplaces, etc. I’d figured the restaurant would be at some point admitted to be cast in a general darkish bluish ambience, which would make red hair potentially appear dark and even black. Mr. Anderson wasn’t looking for a black haired woman, and so he was asking the wrong question. When the solution was that she simply lied down and put her head on a stranger’s lap, I couldn’t help but think Asimov could have done a bit better on this singular occasion. But maybe that was the trick he is primarily a science writer so he would expect his readers to cook up a scientific explanation. Joke’s on me.

I was briefly shocked by the suggestion to kick the redhead in the fanny, until I remembered that in the states this is the lady's backside

there is no need to wait 24h to call the Police. Its a myth. As soon as you believe someone is missing you can contact the police.
