10 Sequels That Drastically Changed The WHOLE FRANCHISE I don't know if it's on the list but Mass Effect 2. That game is so radically different from the original and to me for the worse. The series went downhill as a consequence of all of ME2's problems that ME3 payed the price for. It is absurd how people think the only problem was with the ending. No the problem started with Mass Effect 2 right from the beginning of the game. The rest of the game spins it's wheels not going anywhere really hurting ME3.

What was failed with Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts is that it was entry after very long time and they completely abandoned what game was. People were thirsty for another one that brings back bit of that nostalgia, but updated. Bit like Maro does it. Unlike the forced change to vehicles. Forced changes are very risky, some pan out fine, but they can royally backfire, just ask DMCA for example. Yooka-Laylee is good example of going completely in the other way and instead of taking what old platformers were and updating it, adding to it, fixing issues. it was way to honest to original formula, hence why it felt dated, even if nostalgia was there. Like true art here is to take what old platformers were, update it, add to it, fix issues and annoyances, while still keeping the spirit and feeling there. And sure people latter can warm up to it, once disappointment of so long wait and all destroyed hopes and dreams are put to the past and game is judged as new game, this doesn't really help the franchise. But yeah, imagine for very long time waiting for sequel to beloved franchise, just to have rug pulled from under you because sequel isn't what you loved. You can see that with many big changes, while some work out fine, like Fallout 3. Or some can even go through with people loving them, like Yakuza Lika a Dragon, which people wanted ever since it was April Fools joke. It just doesn't always work out and Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts should kept a lot of platforming in, I think people would have much easier time warming up to vehicles, if they also had what they loved and wanted. Just bit updated.

Hey Gameranx team! Idk if you take reccommendations, but could you do a video on the best Ancient Greek or Ancient Roman games? I love Ancient Greece and Greek mythology so I would love such a video. One game I think you could add to that list is Spartan: Total Warrior. I never hear people talk about that game. I remember I played it at Gamestop as a kid and was so awestruck. Def also AC Odyssey, Immortals Fenyx Rising, maybe Ryse Son of Rome but it's not the best but it's one lol, the OG God of Wars for sure!
I personally wouldn't include Civ, any Total War games, or AoE because i want games where you're IN the action if you know what i mean but if you must then sure.
I'm just rambling now but what what if we had a Spartan game with Arkham Batman combat? THAT WOULD BE BADASS.
Marketing wise, i believe there is appeal for it because there's that tiktok trend of how often do you think of the roman empire? And the new percy jackson series on disney plus is coming out soon in december!

Saints row for me had alot of changes, Some good some bad and a remake that fell completely off. But for me the best had to be the 2nd one it might be a controversial opinion but it had more of a running the streets vibe to it with you managing your saints which really could have been expanded on and you can say it did in the 3rd but in the 3rd one they just went balls to the wall with how absurd it was. Sure saints 2 got alot of criticism as another GTA clone but for me they were going somewhere with it and it had mechanics in that game that if expanded on could of made a bigger franchise then it was. So for me over the years with remakes and trying different ideas its a shame it fell off and 2 just became like a hybrid clone of gta because they did a really good job in my opinion with you having to run the saints and manage the business element of the game. Just a shame where it headed with the remake.

C&C4 did change the formula somewhat, moving from base-building RTS to a control-point one, more in line with CoH. Warhammer DoW did the same between DoW1 and 2.
Duke Nukem 3D also shifted pretty much from 2D platformer to a 3D FPS.
Need for Speed Underground moved the NFS franchise from a track-based to open world fun, similarly Postal 2 moved the gameplay from linear areas to an open world, as did Red Faction Guerilla. Civilization 5 moved the franchise from square grid to a hex one, bringing a revolution on itself. Even Settlers 3 was vastly different to what Settlers 1 and 2 was.
Finally, there's the matter what can you can call a sequel and what you call a spin-off. C&C Renegade was an FPS set in C&C world, Fallout Tactics took Fallout 2 and made it into a squad based tactical RPG.

As also an old man, I am a huge fan of the original Fallout games. I also quite like the BGS Fallouts, but what still bothers me about them is that I don't think BGS ever really got the dark satirical tone right. Of course NV was better in this regard, but I recall on more than on occasion finding some little bit of environmental storytelling in 3 that was just plain depressing, whereas in 1 or 2 it would also been funny in that wrong way that makes you feel a bit bad for laughing at it.

Red Faction: Guerilla deserved an enormous mention here
Jumping from their original First Person Linear games to Third Person & Open World - doing this shift extremely well and without compromising on the incredible destruction Red Faction has been synonymous made a game I'm just not able to forget. That game, and Armageddon are still an absolute blast to go back to and play through again. And I forever wish we could just keep getting more of that series.

I would say Dragon Quest VIII would be worth an inclusion on this list. As it was a turning point in Square Enix's development for the series, and would influence the remakes/etc. Just keep in mind that unlike other big franchises of Square Enix's, the Dragon Quest series is one that Square Enix doesn't like to let modern day trends influence as much. Which is why the latest entry still was very much a classic Dragon Quest Game at its core.

There is a bit of sequence breaking in ocarina of time because everyone usually does the spirit temple last as if you were supposed to, but really, the shadow temple is last because if you look at the pedestal thing with all the medallions on it in the inventory menu you'll see that the shadow temple medallion is next to the light one & the shadow temple is next to hyrule castle so of course its the last one.

I specifically remember when Spec Ops: The Line released I had not interest in it because I thought it was another generic shooter in the middle east and I was completely over those at the time.
Had I known it was a morally questioning, psychological, heart of darkness mystery, I would have picked it up 100%.
Bought it years but it would have been nice to experience it completely blind at the time.

Once Zelda went open world it marked the 1st time i got bored midway in a zelda game and had 0 interest in returning AND skipped the nex cuz it pretty much was cookie cutter with a new building mechanic.
Crazy Soulsborne went open world but it felt perfect n never got tired in comparison but you cannot compare even the dev team of Fromsoft to Nintendo as a whole, fromsoft games are better.

Like a dragon yakuza 7
Is an rpg because of a successful April fools day joke it became demanded they delayed the game to then implement what the April fools day joke was so this is one we can blame us fans for (and I like both styles) I think judgment should continue and use the beat em up style where like a dragon continues its use of rpg turn based

There were _a lot_ of hardcore fans of FO 1 & 2 who didn't really like the shift to a Morrowind style game, myself included although I eventually came to enjoy it for the story. I even got into a debate about that fact with a another user who claimed otherwise in the comments section of the Juicehead video: We Need to Talk About These Bizarre Starfield Updates.

The leap from Blood Omen to Soul Reaver is pretty nuts, and I d say Soul Reaver was hugely innovative in its genre in general. The series went from a top down crawler to a 3D action platformer with realm shifting puzzles that also propelled the story in some wild directions. Not to mention some of the best voice acting of its time that still very much holds up.

Special mentions:
1) Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. for changing what used to be a linear side scrolling game, into a metroid style exploration game (thus the term, Metroidvania. The genre carried over to future entries of the series.
2) Ultima VIII: Pagan. Changed a party based point and click strategic RPG, into a singular real time action RPG.

First game that always comes to mind when this topic is discussed is Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within.
It went from a hero story / arabian fairytale to a gritty, blood-filled villain story full of rock music. In terms of their theme and atmosphere, the contrast between Warrior Within and Sands Of Time of pretty huge.

Sometimes I feel like I m the only one who didn t like FF16. I beat it, but only because I just had to see the story through. I have so many issues with the game I can t write them all here. And I m not trolling either, the game really did not vibe with me, yet I saw so many people loving it saying it s their GOTY.

I remember buying Breath of the Wild on the Switch's launch day just so I had something to play (only played Link's Awakening before, thought it was okay, and it was simultaneously good, but also the freaking worst in mechanics. Stamina was way too limiting, and weapon dexterity was also extremely frustrating.

Man those great days of JRPGs are gone even FF went to action RPG with is so dull in my opinion, FF15 was great as a adventure game and I love it but the story dear lord so I was hoping of combining FF15 adventure plus good story and NO it's just a Final Fantasy light that's all it it

This video helped me realize how odd of a kid I was, I enjoyed Pacman 2, played it a lot as a kid, remember getting frustrated with no being able to control him exactly, but it became pretty intuitive and I got the hang out it when I was young. Would probably drive me nuts now
