I don't think that's true. Foot candles measure light intensity on a surface (actual light, whereas f-stop measures the size of the aperture relative to the distance of the sensor. An f-stop of 1. 4 is notated as f/1. 4 because if you divide the focal length (f) by 1. 4, you get the aperture diameter. As a measurement, f-stop is like the size of a fishing net; foot candles are the number of fish caught. The amount of light (fish) will vary, depending where you point the camera (or toss the net.

The key to winning a contest is the people you work with. Not only do you have to work well together, but each person has to play an important role. The best test of this is 48hr film festivals. Your team is under a lot of stress, and each person is vital in their role. There is a group of 6 that I have been working with and we all have important roles that overlap each other. I wish I had more room to type, but I would say the people you work with is most important. 2nd story 3rd equipment

I'm glad you did a review with the Panasonic Lumix GH2 that is the same camera I plan to buy because of the firmware hacks. Also if you're buying a DSLR camera for filmmaking you need to only buy prime lenses really. Unless you're shooting stills. Good lenses to go with also are the 20mm Lumix F1. 7, Nikon 28mm F2 with adaptor, and Voigtlander 25mm F0. 95mm. The latter is pretty expensive but a must have imo. Are there any other prime lenses you'd recommend?

Is there any chance you can review the Cannon SX40 & SX50? I've been using this Camera to conquer a wide load of projects. The CMOS sensor combined with the DIGIC5 Processor creates technology that competes heavily with ANY DSLR I've seen. The only problem in my eye is the aperture flexibility. It's really hard to blur your background with this camera. But the Zoom features are beyond Magnificent! The other problem is simply the fact that these are bridge cams.

Hi Griffin great new about film fights. Hoping you can help, I'm starting a short film where two private investigators stake out/photograph the main villain walking down the street, they take the photos out of the car window with a large camera lens, I need to find out the best cinematic way of filming the car pulling up, them taking the photos, radioing back to base then driving off. If you can help that would be great, regards: )

I'm unfamiliar with those numbers, I just know I own both Yashica to Canon and Nikon to Canon lens adapters that I use with my t2i. I haven't had any issues with focus. I shoot with some older zeiss prime lenses that I was lucky enough to get off my dad from his still photography days when he was young. There's no electrical connections which is why I think those adapters are so cheap--they're just bits of metal.

Great video Griffin! I'm really enjoying what you're doing with Indy Mogul. I was wondering, how do you go about focusing on yourself for these informative segments? I've always used a camcorder in the past, so it hasn't been an issue. But I now have a Canon 60D and am wondering the best way to achieve proper self focus without anyone else around to help. Thanks a lot, and keep up the awesome work!

I use Canon 600D and i shot in NTSC because you can shot in 30fps 1080p and 60fps 720p but if you shot in PAL you can only shot in 25fps 1080p and 50fps 720p so if you shot fast motion or slow motion i would shot in NTSC and if you are just making a normal short film i would recomend that you shot in 1080p 30fps because the fps just decrease the motion blur a little bit. Sorry for english.

I was hpoing someone could recommend a good camera for me to get.
I'm going to be (hopefully) filming a nearly full-length film with it, done all with the help of my peers etc.
I don't have a lot of experience with cameras other than filmmaking classes in school, and I've been looking for suggestions.
I want manual focus. That's my main point. And obviously HD picture.

after seeing this video I'm thinking of buying de sigma 30mm+ adaptor, but Ive seen that lens is discontinued, so for the priceof a second-hand 30mm sigma + new adaptor I can buy a 25mm F1. 4 panasonic leica, but the manual focus is actually focus-by-wire what do you think is the best, whoud the electic focus of the 25mm leica a problem or not?

DSLRs definitely have their downsides compared to camcorders, which are designed specifically for video. I'd be more interested in Sony's VG20 if it had XLR inputs for mics. Camcorders are convenient, but for the price right now, I feel I can put together a better, cheaper system with a DSLR, shoulder mount, and separate audio recorder.

I just purchased the GH2 and I have the Canon ef 50mm 1. 4 and 16-35mm 2. 8 L 1, but I am looking to add another lens maybe the 24-70 2. 8 or 85 mm 1. 4 lens. Any suggestions? My primary camera is the Canon 7D also. So I am attempting to purchases lenses that I can utilize on the 7D and GH2 with an adapter ring. Thanks.

I agree. I can't tell you have unforgivable bad sound is in a video. Kinda bad picture is forgivable. But bad sound quality nope. I've seen a lot of videos that look great but they suffer from that annoying background noise or that hollow room sound. It just annoys the hell outta me. A good mic tutorial is a must.

If it's daylight you probably don't need any lights. If it's only slightly dark, a wide aperture on a prime lens works well in low-light. At night, you'll definitely need some artificial light. If you can't run extension cables from a house, could you use a generator, or a car with a power inverter to plug in some lights?

Well my main problem is low budget. really low ><
and the problem with shooting during day time is that sometimes the sun isn't bright enough or that i want to give it some cool effect or even more lights.
When i'll be shooting again i'll keep that in mind. now i only need to get some lights! :D thank you

Check your exposure and ISO settings. If you're in manual mode then you'll have to get everything perfect for whatever light you're shooting in. Also low end cameras like the T3i have notoriously bad low-light performance. I would recommend getting a prime lense for shooting in low light. (I have a T4i)

About lenses: Many old SLR lenses are also great for video since they're fully manual focus. You don't need or even want auto focus when shooting short films for example, so lenses originally designed to be manually focused are great. You might need an adaptor but I'd say the result is worth the price.
