I understand where you're coming from, but it's not about just copying what you see on BFX. It's about learning from working with actors/directors/filmmakers, planning/preproduction, working on a budget and small time frame. Sure he used an Epic, but this video wasn't a how to use the Red Epic video, he just happened to have one. A filmmaker should know it's not about the camera, it's how the person behind it uses it, and what's in front of it. There are things to learn here. indymogul

In their defence, indie has nothing to do with the equipment you use. it means independent. You can still be indy if you spend money on a RED epic. You could get that money by doing music videos, or just saving it up. Plus, you sometimes can borrow good equipment, if you talk to the right people, and let your social skills do their magic.
I think its annoying, that people always think indy means no budget or sub-par-equipment.
Not hatin', just sayin'; )

Great film makers should be able to adapt and create on the fly. If you can get some amazing stuff but only have a few hours to get it then you rework your idea. Plus if something doesn't look as good as you wanted rather then put something bad out then you rework. Never put something out until you are happy for you name to be attached to it. Don't just 'make do' because then you will get a reputation of being a bad film maker and then no jobs come your way.

freelance/independent/guerilla filmmaking is ALL about limition on budget, time, locations! a project with no restrictions would mean that you going to start something you can never complete or reach a point you are happy with because your options are endless. You would get caught in a constant loop of near-perfection. Knowing you have a limitation or restriction of any kind means you push yourself and your team further than you would if you had no restrictions.

A great video with some good lessons. However, I have one major issue with it. SAFETY! You spent money on a camera, break-a-way props, and more but, saved $25 by using old cushions and pillows instead of renting the professional crash pad. I don't know what the crash pad looked like and maybe what you used was thicker. But it sounded like you cut corners on safety. I know the guy doing the jump was OK with it. That doesn't make it OK!

you should shoot a video about a young boy being tomented by his parents. Then the young boy can go outside and he can look at nature closely this is of coarse where you can do close up macro shots. The boy look at nature closely and he feels peaceful and that place of peace can be his area of relaxation away from his parents so he doesnt have to be yelled at all the time. Please consider it thanks Griffin

I have been on many sets where guys were willing to do things to get the shot. I stopped them because its not worth the risk. What is the cost of making a mistake and it is revealed that $25 was saved at the expense of a performers safety. His spine and your career could be finished. Think about it. Next time save money on cheaper pies and rent the proper safety equipment.

Definitely keep the diversity in the programming here on IndyMogul. I've been watching since middle school/early high school, and the DIY stuff was great, but now I've grown and am a student filmmaker who needs to get my professionalism figured out. Set etiquette and creative planning are extremely important to my learning. So this episode was great for me.

i am not trying to be mean or anything just a suggestion i think you guys should start doing more stuff that can acctualy help us indie filmmakers out on the awesome directors project because most of us aren't directing a music video we are doing a short film and even more of us don't have RED cameras most of us used DSLR's just saying: )

Excellent advice. Can't wait to see that Macro Lense in action! My only suggestion would be some sort of music video with transitions of insects crawling in front of the lens and stuff or something along those lines. Never seen one of those lenses, so I don't know what to suggest.

Great episode Griffin! I'm a musician myself and making music videos I feel like is today's best way to get your music out there (not living in LA, Nashville, Austin, NY, Portland, Seattle, etc. So this is my project's main focus - music videos, of course along with the songs.

Yes, I think at some point I will hopefully be using something like the Red Epic, but that will take a lot of time and at the point that I'm on right now, I can't do this. So if I don't get a proper basis I think it will take a lot more time for me to reach that level.

I didn't feel like this episode was a waste if i didn't have a RED Epic, it was just general film making applied to a high spec machine. Doesn't matter if your using you iPhone or a RED, if you don't have the general skills then your not gonna produce really great films!

The line about when things go right or wrong sums up my college film making experience. I had moments where everything went wrong, but I pulled out the best product. Greatness is not when you do everything right. It's what you do when it all falls apart.

Sometimes, though, I feel like creativity comes from being restricted. Like awesome DIY projects spawning from no money. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but some of the projects I'm proudest of are the ones with tough obstacles or deadlines imposed.

Just the simple, low budget stuff. For instance something that shows me how to make it look like someone is performing these stunt without actually doing them or putting yourself in danger if you don't have much experience with stunts.
reply

Yeah i 100% agree, it was better when it was just the older episode when it was just the few guy's doing it then they quit (i was sad, but really happy it was gonna carry on) but now it isnt the same. BRING BACK THE BUDGET WHEELcries

You guys are awesome! Can anyone check out my video Operation Raccoon City. I got a lot of thumbs down on this video. Is it the ending the reason why so many dislikes? I appreciate the feedback. Thanks! Jason

I liked todays episode very much! BTS footage is my favourite, even though I may not have learnt too much that I can find useful now, but I love watching how others make films, and I sort of learn from their ways

he whats up with the magenta colored light its distracting and it makes a weird shadow on your face which makes me think why is this man not distracted by this light that is pointed straight at his face.
