First of all, to understand what happened to Chewie, you gotta understand who Chewbacca the Wookiee was. Now, Chewbacca was born to a one-legged wookiee mother. He was always ashamed of this, man! And right after that, he fought in the Clone Wars and in the Kashyyyk resistance until he became a slave to the empire and was sold to this man, Tito Liebowitz. Hes a small-time gunrunner and uh. gladiator fight promoter on Mimban. So he puts Chewie into training. They see Chewies good! He is damn good! But then he had the fight of his life. They pit him against imperial deserter Han Solo, who actually frees Chewbacca and became his best friend, his brother for so many years! So when Kylo Ren killed Han Solo at Starkiller Base, he took the only family Chewie could be proud of. He started doing killersticks and spice and he was miserable!
