I will never understand how, after the disaster that was his Star Wars film, anyone thought Rian Johnson was a good fit to direct his own trilogy. Though I fully expect to be inundated with arguments for my personal opinion, The Force Awakens was finally a film many (if not most) of the fans could get behind after the disappointing prequel trilogy. Though many argue that it came across as little more than a remake of A New Hope, there were worse sins than borrowing liberally from the film that made us all fall in love with Star Wars.
The film also put into motion several plotlines that we all thought would carry us through all three films. Rey's lineage, how the villainous Snoke came to power, etc. But upon its highly-anticipated follow-up, The Last Jedi, most of the questions we'd discussed and theorized about endlessly after the first film were quickly tossed aside. There was no big surprise in who Rey's parents were beyond them being poor and abandoning her. Snoke was also quickly dispatched with little explanation as to who the character was. The Last Jedi was to date the most polarizing film in the entire series and when JJ Abrams returned to direct The Rise of Skywalker, he was handed the aborted remnants of what he'd worked so hard to put into motion with the first film. How anyone can be foolish enough to think that the mess he made of the sequel trilogy qualified Rian Johnson for even one more film is simply baffling.
