well, love me some Viola Davis, in the movies, for sure!
but, WHAT, now! because IF someone you INVITE to the wedding has a SPOUSE, etiquette DEMANDS you do the RIGHT THING and make sure the SPOUSE/Life Mate/Life Partner is invited as WELL!
so how is our lovely, brilliant, super-gifted Ms. Viola so CONFUSED about that! or am I the one who's so astoundingly confused? I mean, did I misunderstand what she said about Mr. Yates WIFE! if so, please, tell me and please forgive me my limitations, you guys.
EDIT: which is one of the reasons you include the clarity of it being a '+1 invite' to/in the wedding announcement/invitation. for some invitees, anyway. because one might not KNOW, IF a guest they really want to have at the event - who they had to track down:
one might NOT know if the person has a significant other in their lives, depending on circumstances. but husbands or wives should NEVER be left out IF you know the person has one. unless and but IF:
someone you love and really want to be there has a difficult Life-mate. who might ruin the wedding? if that probability is high [or even low, imho]? : then it's ABSOLUTELY ok to NOT invite the friend or relative with the potentially wedding-damaging partner/spouse.
and, btw:
if that happens ENOUGH times, none of our business. for sure. but then, hopefully, that friend or relative/family member with the impossible, aggravating partner, hopefully, they'll will get the hint that it's time to get rid of that spouse. and ok, meaning, LEGALLY, not literally.
