Leprosy isn't actually that infectious, 95% of people have a strong natural immunity to it, the reason it used to spread is because people back in the day didn't didn't know about bacteria and viruses and thought that disease was caused by bad air. Also I'm guessing that the leprosy in the show is greyscale but I haven't watched it so I don't know.
