The rumors were true! EA re-released the first two Sims games for Windows PCs to mark the 25th birthday of the series. And they even fixed them to work on modern PCs! Kinda. Sorta. Ehh, an attempt was made. Still, I'm happy to see these exist on Steam and whatnot, so let's dive in and take a closer look at The Sims Legacy Collections from 2025! First thank you for the honest review, i'm glad you like the re-release but sadly i don't. my problem is the price, if they did any bug fixes OR higher textures OR extra content that wasn't included on the original game OR extra soundtrack i mean ANYTHING other than a patch that makes it working on windows 10 and 11 i would say they are worth the price point.
but the problem is 20 bucks for a patch that lets you play a decade old game on 720 p and 30 bucks for a patch that lets you play a decade old game on 1080p is too much( and remember with the same bugs and crashes. the only good thing comes from this re-release is fortunately they included dlcs and when they go on a sale 6-12 months later you can buy it for a reasonable price point.
like i said if they even fixed some of the bugs i would gladly pay 20-30 bucks for Sims 2 but they chose not to. this is not an indie company, we are talking about a multi billion dollar company with Fifa, Star Wars, Need for Speed franchise licenses belong to them. they could've hire a couple of more devs or even MODDERS and they could fix the most annoying bugs.
i'll wait for a steam sale tbh.

It's a shame they never went back to an objective driven Sims game, like how you needed to improve your Sim and complete objectives to move out of your mom's or other roommate's houses like in the first game. It not only acts as a decent tutorial to incentivize the player to try things they might not have otherwise, but it constantly gives us something to work towards, other than the vague build wealth and keep your status bars high.
I appreciate the sandbox style gameplay for its inclusivity for people that enjoy that less restrained freedom, but not at the cost of existing gameplay components that first enticed me into the franchise. Both systems can coexist, yet we are deprived it. This has prevented me from buying a new Sim's game post The Urbz | Sims in the City for PS2.
Creating my own objectives in the new games is not the same as having an existing objective system.

Hey LGR, love your content and I always love it when you cover Sims. Hope your living situation is recovering well.
It's sad to see TS1 performing so poorly at 4k on your rig, which I assume is much better than mine: 2080ti, i9-9900k, 64gb RAM, SSD.
No joke I'm getting locked 60fps at 4k, it runs super smooth outside of the very occasional hitch when running the fastest time skip mode. Maybe it's a driver issue or something like that
Overall, outside of distorted speech audio on TS2 I'm enjoying these re-releases. It's great to have versions of these games that I can just install and run with an interface that I can see without needing to spend hours fixing and modifying files. Hopefully some more patches to fix the reported issues are on the way. Everyone deserves to try these classics in the best way possible!

(10: 54) I've a feeling that the reason why the IKEA pack wasn't included is not only due to licencing issues, but probably because a lot of the products featured in the pack were likely discontinued by IKEA over the years, as from what I can tell reading The Sims Wiki (the separate website, not their old Fandom website, the pack featured items from their 2007 and/or 2008 collections, and I remember from an article posted by The Verge’ that they tend to discontinue products over time to make way for new products so as to not overcrowd their stores.
Even though I haven't been to a H&M store in a while, I've a feeling that most of the items featured in the H&M pack are still available to this day and/or EA were able to re-licence the pack.

I genuinely never thought they would fold and re-release these. As much as EA loves money, they seem to love making us miserable even more. It is a shame those of us that already have Sims 1 and 2 discs have to re-purchase these, but it's way easier to spend $40, get both games and EPs, and not have to go through hell trying to tweak your computer just right to run these 20-25 year old games. A step in the right direction at least, but hopefully they fix these games and that's it. I just don't want them to get any glitchier. Honestly, this is way better than their 20th anniversary. Then again, my expectations were a little higher back then.

PSA I think a lot of the crashes might be due to OneDrive synchronization although supposedly there's a new) error in the Sims 2 code where it doesn't check for some relevant household info during loading screens, which is why there are crashes and Sims getting deleted. I think OneDrive is probably the major culprit regarding crashes though. If it tries to access the neighborhood to update to the cloud WHILE the game is using them, this causes problems and results in the game being unable to do what it's trying to do. This is probably why the SteamDeck has the fewest issues although please correct me if I'm wrong!

They need to have one of those pre-startup windows that allows you to run at specific resolutions and windowed and windowed borderless or full screen-- I understand that the games are how the games are and making any actual changes to their interfaces could turn into bigger issues, but surely this would be a workaround, something that before the game even starts lets you curate that experience. It would be amazing if they were able to somehow target the UI and upscale it in an option like this but idk how feasible that is. Still, I really hope they explore options to improve the experience.

HELL, THE SIMS 3 WON'T EVEN PLAY ON MY ASRock gaming ($2000) PC and it should, but nope. I install ALL OF MY GAMES DIGITALLY AS MY PC IS SO NEW IT HAS NO D: / DRIVE, THUS CANNOT INSERT A DISC AND IT HAS NO WAY TO ADD ONE WITH NO INTERNAL CABLES TO HOOK IT UP, yet the chassis has a spot where I could install one. Go figure. Nonetheless if anyone has advice how to get it to run on Windows 11 HOME NOT PRO (AS I LOATHE WIN 11 PRO) 64 bit version 24H2 then PLEASE LMK! Via commenting and replying my comment, should go without saying, but nowadays you must specify lol.

I really, really wish I would have been smart and kept an old system to play games on. I really miss playing Sims 1 and 2. I never played Sims 3 and hated Sims 4. I really appreciate this review because I was very reluctant to get this bundle because I refuse to use an EA account or their horrible client. I am going to wait until I can see if they fix the crashing, though, as that would drive me crazy, but I'm cautiously optimistic. : ) Also, sorry to hear you were affected by the hurricane - thank you for what you do!

Honestly playing these has been pretty ok for me. When I first opened Sims 1 the cursor disappeared and I had to hit Alt Enter to fix it (for some reason) With the Sims 2, I downloaded it on a drive that didn't have a ton of space and it instantly crashed so I just reinstalled it on my other drive. So it seems the Sims 2 just freaks out if there's a lack of disk space. Other than that the games have been smooth sailing for me. I have been especially enjoying the Sims 2 recently (almost too much.

Im still mid-video but, I bet the resolution of the game could be set with a launch option. Instead of setting your whole system to the lower resolution (which I find to be too much of a pain to do for any game. SOnic CD on steam runs too fast at 144Hz but I'm not changing my whole system for one game.
Same with borderless windowed I wonder if it's a launch option. Or forcing the game through Steam's gamescope (might be a linux-only thing, and setting the resolution and framerate there.

I'll try to change the resolution of my netbook to see if it works. Mine is also 1080 and I had the same problem, and since is a netbook smaller than a regular laptop the lack of zoom has been a problem for me. I played the sims 1 before you the go to certain websites and download it for free, because it wasn't anywhere to buy digitally and I didn't have any issue with the zooming. Although the colors in this are more sharp and vibrant in my opinion. S

idc about the backlash. idc that Sims 2 was made available for free, for a limited time, years and years ago. I'm just glad I can play it again. I'm not as glad that CCs are borked, but I'm still thrilled that I'm able to play this again without many hitches. I have some nostalgia for Sims 1, but I'm not as thrilled to play it as I am Sims 2. Thanks EA for doing something. moderately right. Now do the same for NFSUG2.

EA used to give out games for free on Origin every month. The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection was one of those games that was given out for free via this program. That's how I got it, and a bunch of other games, including Dead Space and Plants V Zombies. However, for a while, you could request a code for it from customer support. Obviously, they have since discontinued both things. And Origin, for that matter.

Hot take, but these were only rereleased not to celebrate the games' or the series, but because EA is well aware that 1&2 are the fans' favorites, and that 4 was a total flop. Why there won't be a 5, and why 3 still costs money while 4 is F2P.
This is just EA's version of the Definitive Edition GTAs, and they are cooked.

I grew up playing the console ports mostly. Crazy how different the original Sims is. There's so much more to do and like triple the content on PC but the models and textures are loads better on console for some reason. Hopefully sims 2 on PC will blow me away since ive never played it extensively besides on console.

I was seriously just talking to a friend last week about the Sims games and how hard The Sims 1&2 were to come by these days and get working on modern machines, and she told me she thought EA was probably going to re-release them soon enough. Then just a few days later these come out, talk about timing, LOL.

Crashes in any official release are inadmissible. It's also sad to see how standards dropped. Seeing the original Sims released in digital DRM platforms makes sad, not happy. Yet people have embraced not owning what they buy for the commodity it sometimes brings, even if it's not priced accordingly.
reply

I never played 1 or 2, and spent most of my time playing 3 and most of its expansions. I tried 4 for a short while but hated it compared to 3, so I uninstalled it and let it gather dust on the shelf. I would love to go back to 3, but I only have the Origin version and forget that annoying app! >: (
reply

i woulda spent the money if they had at the very least fixed the bugs and incompatibility with windows 11/12 etc. but they didnt even do that. they just want your money, as usual. disappointing. if it's not stable and still has the same issues as a cracked version why would I ever buy it
