It's nice to see someone from the U. S. admitting that us British were better than them at something. I have to agree though the U. K. game programmers in the 80's were the dog's b#-locks! Like the Oliver twins, Ocean, Matthew Smith and Code masters, to mention just a few. It was indeed a golden age for game programming in the U. K. Back bedroom programmers were thrivingin the U. K. back then and there was so much talent in the U. K. when you look back. Matthew Smith basically created and programmed Manic Miner literally in his bedroom and the game was a sensation and ported to just about every system imaginable. As was the sequel to it Jet Set Willy Those where the days! I wish we had as much pride in our country and what we do nowadays. Alas, i can but hope!

Like the Oliver twins, Ocean, Matthew Smith and Code masters, to mention just a few. It was indeed a golden age for game programming in the U. K. Back bedroom programmers were thrivingin the U. I still have two working Commodore 64 computers, 1 joystick for it, a floppy drive, and modem for it, along with plenty of software as well. I even have some of the magazines which came out at the time with the software programs to run on the machines. I purchased my first Commodore 64 from a company in Saginaw, Michigan and got the second one from a guy in Louisiana who was being transferred to another air base and didn't want to bring all the items he had with him. With this purchase I got the floppy drive and plenty of software, and the joy stick, and a modem. I loved much of the software and some was used regularly, and everything worked fine. I had another modem, and a tape drive, but don't know what happened to them.

These were BIG games and I'm sorry LGR only had only arcade titles to demonstrate in this video.

Really takes me back to being a kid, this one. Turrican 1 and 2 are legendary, along with the likes of Creatures and Wizball.
Don't have the disk drive or any disks anymore, but I've still got the tape drive and all the tapes though the tape drive connector needs fixed. It's not fatal by any means, the plastic bit that holds the connector in place inside the plug has snapped and just needs something like a piece of matchstick glued in as a replacement.

Also, NTSC stands for -Never The Same Color Twice-. PAL is the vastly superior format (but it still has it's own issues, sure. It really sucks though that companies in the 90's got really lazy with converting NTSC to PAL. As a result, we got ugly black bars on the top and bottom of the screen and charaters looked fatter/squished, the games ran slower and often this also included the music being slower.

It's crazy I was born in 1981 and a military brat so apple 2e was the mainstay until the IBM compatible PC's took over when windows became a thing so I really didn't have any exposure to commodore or Atari computers the funniest thing of all is when I'd hear about commodore 64 in the mid 90's I thought people were talking about a Nintendo game competing with pilot wing 64 I always thought Atari was just a low quality console maker!

On the subject of PAL: I know it's nearly 10 years later now, but even almost 20 years ago you could get a composite to dvi or vga adapter that supported both pal and ntsc. from the high end like the dvdo iscan pro that people would put into their high end home theater setups down to the kinds of $25 adapters you can find on amazon today.

Unfortunately I never owned a C64. In the early 80s I had an Apple II Clone (of very good quality) with loads of games (about 200) and other software. With a Z80 card and a card for 80 columns I could run CP/M with programs like Wordstar and could do some serious work. Of course I had also a printer for it. But on the other hand this whole Apple II system cost as much as three or four C64 computers. ;-)
