DK will always play a special role in my heart. Although it is a base building RTS at its core, the way you build the buildings (rooms) and corridors has always intrigued me. Such a great original concept for an RTS game to create the entire gameplay experience in a negative space where you let the player create his/her own level design for the most part.
There is actually a great use for the possession spell, as you can look around your dungeon and admire your architecture in a first person view, which at the time was unheard of in the RTS genre. I like designing my dungeon with long wide corridors with symmetric columns and archways so that the dungeon also has an aesthetic appearance. That is why, after i beat a level i just possess a warlok and walk around the whole dungeon in FPV to see how it all turned out. And THAT is why the possession spell is there. I dont think it was ever made for combat purposes, but more likely for scouting and taking a walk through your dungeon.
Great review mate!

What I love so much about this game is it's classic dark fantasy art style. It's colorfull yet grim and it's such a great fantasy style. Some older D&D artwork is like this too.
I wish modern games used this art style instead of the goofy cartoony look of warcraft that seems popular these days when it comes to fantasy.
The second Dungeon Keeper game was good, but not as a sequel to this game. It's art style was not so good and the early 3d shapes of creatures and heroes did not age well. Also that game is a lot slower.
I kind of love the frantic spellcasting of the first game. It truly gives you the idea that these mages are throwing everything they have in the fight instead of slowly pointing a staff and shooting a fireball. In DK1, they shoot like 10 spells in that time while putting up shield spells as well.

Aww, Dungeon Keeper was the first game I ever wrote a proper hacking guide for - the Demo version, actually. It lacked a lot of assets, but somehow still had all of the skills, abilities and stuff implemented, for all of the units, just limited to one demo map IIRC. It was THE BEST hacking the map data (it's a text file, so not even hard) and then taking over units without asset data and completely obliterating those Goody No Shoes with ultimate units, lol.
I remember my dad got super angry about that for some reason at me for trying to submit that to a games magazine. Never got printed obvs, I don't think they even did submissions, especially not from overexcited 13 year olds lol.

This was a 10/10 game.
The sequel was, at best, 8/10.
The main problem was that The Reaper isnt just a unit that was super strong and super grumpy, so you had to balance it, especially of you wanted to bring a high level one to The next map.
In DK2? Just cap alot of land for high mana and summon The Reaper.
I stopped Summoning him because it ruined the game by turning it into easy mode.
I was very sad when The two final Bosses REQUIRED you to summon him. You couldnt hut them with your regular units. And he just wrecked them without any asssistance.

I know, this is kind of late. But did you know, that the german musician Lotte Ohm made a song with Dungeon Keeper as lyrical content? It's called -Hinter diesen Mauern- (Behind these walls) and features guest vocals by Sven Franzisko of the Hamburg-based Indie/Weird-Rock/Rap-band Fischmob. They even made a pretty funny video (with scenes from the game. And the song stayed for a few weeks in the german charts, good times.

It really is one of the best RTS games ever. I miss it as I don't have any old hardware I could play it on. However I have done a little digging and so I'm DLing OpenDungeons and OpenKeeper as I type this. I'm not expecting them to have quite the same atmosphere, but if either of them turn out to be what 0ad is to AgeofEmpires I shall be happy.

I always loved this one and found it really original and unique. Then I found out a Super Famicom game by the name of Chaos Seed and well, Dungeon Keeper feels a lot less original now. Still and excellent game and a classic, though!
And for the record, Chaos Seed is also great and mighty interesting in its own right, worth checking out.

I remember buying this game when Iwas 3 years old with my uncle when we went into the game shop, came in the big box. I managed to complete it when I was 5 years old, Yes really I sat infront of the pc day in day out 24/7 nearly playing it, till I finished it, the horned reaper has been my pfp since Myspace and MSN days lol

You underestimate the power of posession. The map you show is a great example. Posess an imp, tunnel into the neutral torture chamber to get the mistress and she will mop up the random guardians and you get a powerful mob early on. or just run your level 10 Honry to the enemy dungeon heart at the start of a map and laugh.

I remember when I tortured so many heros to death that my dungeon got filled with so many ghosts that the game crashed. Unluckily I had saved the game just before the crash, meaning I messed up my progress completely because it would crash seconds after loading it back up again. Pretty funny way to go though.
