During the summer of 2001, Texaco and EA ran a promotion for NFS: Porsche Unleashed that included both physical die-cast cars and exclusive PC game demo discs. Let's unbox a new set and check 'em out!

I don't recall ever seeing the demo for NFS Porsche, so this is a really interesting promotion that I'm certain never made it over here - also because Texaco never was very big in Scandinavia. I bought NFS Porsche when it released back in the day, only to instantly find that it wouldn't run because it had a vile DRM, so I had to get hold of a cracked version to play it. But I played the crap out of that game, one of the best made NFS titles ever. When I first got it I was still using the Voodoo2, and then I got the Voodoo5 I was disappointed at how little difference it made for the graphics in this game - it just made the cars shinier, but everything was still very low quality textures, even back then

Still have my copy of Need for Speed Porsche Unleashed I believe I got it from a Book Fair. One of my favorite racing games when I was younger for sure! Cruising in the 911 in Cote D'Azur. Some great music from this game and the older Need for Speed games miss all the great soundtracks. EDIT I also happwn to have a few boxed action toys from the 90's I have a Rusty Wallace car but its in a box not like these are packed and a bit better quality than these. I also have a mini Rusty Wallace Racing Helmet on a stand in a box as well. Both mint Ive had them since I was young.

I remember my family got each of these! We still have the 911 Turbo CD (and the box, but misplaced the other CD's and the cars. (The last survivor was the #28 with the main black Texaco paint scheme. I remembered the 3 Ricky Rudd cars, but forgot what the others were, although I remembered they weren't NASCAR cars) Thanks so much for making this video and uploading the demos to archive. org! Edit: I remember we had all 3 of the NASCAR cars plus at least one non-NASCAR, and I remember the 944 with the Alps track and the Carrera RS with Corsica, so we must have had all of them.

These were also available at at least one Shell gas station (the one where my family got them, likely because it was owned by a company co-owned by both Shell and Texaco. (Up until I researched it just now, I thought it was because Shell bought a lot of Texaco stations after Chevron and Texaco merged, since Shell had exclusive rights to use the Texaco name on gas stations from early 2002 to June 2004, but it turns out the conversions didn't start until 2002, and they might have just been converting Texaco stations they owned already through their joint ventures)

There are all these jokes about AAA titles going like -half of the 60 bucks you spend on it go into marketing-. In my life I saw about 10 BF or COD posters on local bus stops and maybe a few internet ads. and games com of course. But I've never seen them giving demos away in colabs with other branches or outside of computer stores. I don't watch tv, but I'm pretty sure there aren't many gaming ads either. Point is, I find out about new releases specifically searching for them online and to me it feels like they used to spend way more on advertising in the 90s.

Two years late to the party, but: Porsche Unleashed on PC is one of the best racing games of it's era, and -deep breath- possibly of all time. Play it with a wheel and pedals. You'll have to mess around to get it to work on a modern system, but there are enough patches and mods available to get it to work. It's worth the fuss! Ironic they would call it -mind numbing-, considering what NFS and EA has become.

I'm surprised to see it's actually a Porsche licensed product. Porsche never let any racing game use their cars that's why all racing games have RUF cars. Because they are actual titled as RUF but built on the Porsche platform, RUF just uses the Porsche shell. So kinda of makes sense that's why they are used in this promotion. Cool

Any chance you might be able to cover the ID4 (Independence Day) games that were distributed on floppy disk as a promotion for the film? I recall they were available for Mac and Windows, naturally on separate floppies, and only one disk to a package, so you had to choose carefully. Not sure, but I think they were bundled with the toys.

Thank you for posting this! I played these demos growing up and only ever knew it as -Need For Speed: Texaco- and could never find anything about it. I never realized it was just NFS 5/Porsche because it never came up anywhere, and I was too young to have remembered many details by the time the disc got too damaged to work
