Ahh yes, one must love a crappy all-compromises machine from the era when the Apple ][ series had better games than a PC.
Fun fact, the price is equivalent to just shy of 5k these days.
Fun fact, my dad bought a bespoke Pentium 90 from a small system builder when we moved to the UK in 1994 with a GUS, Matrox, internal SCSI Jaz drive with an unbelievable 1GB per disk, 1GB 7200RPM Quantum Fireball, 32MB of RAM, Quad speed CD-ROM and a PanaSync E21 21 CRT monitor with a max resolution of 1600x1280. It cost 3500UKP which, at the time was about 6000 US, which is about 12k in today's money. You'd pretty much have to buy a workstation to spend that kind of money on a PC these days but for some reason everyone thinks gaming PCs are expensive. Oh, and that PC was ready for about a 1000 (in 1997 money) upgrade just 3 years later.
Returning to the subject at hand, This behemoth would have cost the equivalent of 4000 in todays money by the time you got out the door. As I am looking at my 600 Flex 5 - 14 which I can literally use without a desk for more than a few minutes, I can't help but wonder if anyone ever actually did anything useful with these things or if they were mostly just for showing off during the cocaine fueled '80s, along with your Lamborghini Diablo SV and Car Phone. Fast forward a couple decades to the mid '00s and you could have your overpriced Lambo and your overpriced laptop all in one, lol. And you didn't need the car phone anymore.
That pop out screen is just ridiculous. Like, here, let's just make a super complex mechanism to make the monitor tilt a few degrees at the touch of a button. I think it was probably the same guy who designed car seats that swiveled outwards so fat people could get out of their cars.

The still plastic wrapped handle is one of those absurd habits some peculiar people have that make me cringe. Why do you even do that! That stuff is only there to protect the part during factory storage, packing, shipping. As the protective sheet itself gets worn makes the part look bad, and it finally turns to a sticky mess when a sensible person gets their hands on it and removes the darn thing. Thankfully, this was not the average case and that plastic could be removed relatively cleanly and wasn't too worn. But I've seen grotesque instances of such a phenomenon.

every time i see old computers like this i wonder if some of the people having to lug them around wondered why these and not just pen and paper. ahahaha.
i work a job where they tried to push us towards tablets and it was so thoroughly rejected over writing and entering after that eventually the tablets disappeared to the back. (one handed typing is the worst and i don't regret it.

The biggest issue with old portable computers isn't always even carrying them, it's the pain of actually using them on the go. You can't just pull it out and use it like a phone or modern laptop, you have to plug in power, boot it up and maybe put in a disk, connect to a phone line or internet. Once you get one out to use it you have to dedicate some time to make it worth it.

7: 15 Hey, Master Blaster Pinball. I played that for years as a kid before even knowing what the Pinball Construction Set was. Come to think of it, I think I may have had that actual disk. Or at least I know I had some from the same publisher.
(Also, totally agree. Love the VCR-style lights. You almost never see that on PCs)

Been watching for so long that I just realized how you talk through all the features of these old PCs it s like you re selling us all one of these and it s 1985. Maybe it s an American thing to like to be sold to. It s shame it s not 1985 because you make this thing sound amazing.

The styling & design remind me of the Compaq Portable III, although that didn't come out until 1987.
Still, this looks like a good little system. That built in Setup program is nice!
I prefer the Portable III's plasma display to this one, but that's just me.

I have been depressed for some years. I am outdated, gritty, no allure. I should just observe myself as a system and work at cleaning up the basic stuff that worked. As traits of personality. Thank you Mr for reminding me.
Fixing stuff is therapy.

HEY KID, WANNA TRY SOME DOS?
LOL. Yep. It was always more like Ey I've got this old computer and wonder if I can use it to get online and it was an Epson 286 with orange plastic in random spots. Got to fix up some pretty funky old machines.

I would love to get two of these. One for me to use in it's original form and one to modify to have a blackberry slide out keyboard behind the screen. As in just that thin screen and the keyboard. Impossible I know, but I would love to have it.

I also grew up with weird old computers. Not so much family friends as being allowed to play with old hardware at my dad's place of work, though. I really wish I been able to keep some of those old systems I played with back then.

A friend of mines father had a portable 386 during the late eighties early nineties. A cute little thing that we used to play some old games on when my friend got it. To bad he ended up taking it apart and throwing it away. :S
