To be honest adult Groot from the first movie wasn't the sharpest pencil in the box either. I don't see any change in intelligence between the adult and baby version. His personality changed though in the way that he became mischievous and more angry (like the small breed dogs are because they are so tiny that they feel threatened and they have to compensate with barking lol whole the big breeds are just chill)

Creators of the movie have said that Groot isnt the same soul/person as baby Groot, but more like a genetic offspring. Different personality and no memories of adult Groot is pretty much the definition of being someone else from a philosophical perspective anyways. Also, Groot look at Rocket as a best friend/companion whereas baby Groot look at Rocket as his dad (his last words)

One of the things the briefly hint to in Guardians of The Galaxy 2 is that Groot's memories are contained within his body so when he loses part of his body he also looses a portion of his memories and personality which would probably explain why in the ending to the first film Rocket got very upset about Groot sacrificing himself even though Rocket knew that Groot could regrow.

You should probably modify this. Baby Groot ISN'T Groot from the first movie. James Gunn confirmed that in a tweet saying First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son. He doesnt have adult Groots memories for one. Adult Groot would know what button to push!

James Gunn said in a tweet, first Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son. I think it's much more obvious in Vol. 2, as he has a different personality, none of his memories, and is much, much dumber.
