After Prince Philip's death, the Queen's life of service should remind us of the huge, tangible power for peace and stability the British monarchy is for everyone in Britain, the commonwealth and for the world. In the 19th & 20th centuries the U. S. A, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Greece suffered in various ways civil wars, political storms, and dictatorships. This shows what can go wrong in the absence of a head of state which is above politics, which opposes illegal dictatorship and helps keep the peace. If there are many reasons England, Wales, Scotland, Canada and Australia have had no civil war since Culloden in 1746, having a constitutional monarchy is an important one. In the UK, 'peace' in formal speech is The Queen's Peace.
Of course the Queen & Prince Philip had their failings as parents, and Prince Philip could be tactless. Whatever mistakes the royal family have made, let us be grateful for the service they give, and for the difference the monarchy makes for the better, in the world. There will always be violence in the world, and billions of people who know or understand nothing of the British monarchy. The value of the British crown since the 1700s is, billions of people have lived under it without civil war, lynching, dictatorship in their lives.

It's funny how many of these rules some of them actually break. The Queen's own father was called by his nickname by relatives and close friends. William and Harry especially don't follow such posh rules, like Princess Diana literally raised her sons to be there own persons and not to follow all of the strict rules established by the monarchy, heck they both choose to marry commoners which once was seen as unfavorly. That's another reason to have loved her!

This reminds me of a heartbreaking documentary I watched on Princess Diana. It showed how harsh the rules could be and the paparazzi's effect on her. Pretty eye opening. Goes to show that rich people or people of power may look like they live a perfect life, but so many things go on behind the scenes.

The nickname one is odd once you consider that Kate's actual name is Kate. However, because Kate is more commonly used as a nickname for Katherine/Catherine, Kate's name in her official title was changed to Catherine in order to make it more proper sounding.

What about The Queen not being able to attend the wedding of someone who is previously divorced? She couldn't go to Charles and Camilla's wedding for that reason. She won't go to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's either, because Meghan has been divorced.

Im looking through comments and saying how sad this life is. I dont really think so a lot of the rules seem to be in place for safety concern and decent public appearance. At most I think theyre inconvenient or annoying at most.

The one about nicknames is just plain common etiquette as far as I'm concerned. Whether you're speaking to the Queen of England or a homeless person, you don't call that person by a name she/he didn't say you could use.

Just after saying that there is to be no physical contact with the royals, they show multiple shots of people shaking hands with them. Granted, no hugs but handshakes are still physical contact.

William wasn't the first to bring his children with him on foreign tours. It was his mother who broke that barrier by bringing him to Australia when he was (I think) nine months old.

And I thought my family's rules were strict when I was a kid! These rules are ridiculous! Being British royalty doesn't sound like a fun life, it sounds more like a prison life.
reply

The number 1 rule is interesting as our Queen in Denmark has an official nickname, which is Daisy. Though people don't really call her that in public. That I know of.

Hummm, Meagain Sparkles needs to start following the rules. She still thinks its ok to give autographs, take selfies and dress like she just fell out of bed!
reply

I wish you guys would start to call them the BRITISH royal family. You make it sound like they are the only royal family in the world.
reply

Queen Elizabeth has a nickname, Lilibet. That's what her friends and family (probably not her children but cousins) call her.
reply

This makes me so glad I'm not a royal.
Also the kids aren't allowed to wear long pants? Won't those poor kids get cold?

reply

I see a majority of the strict dress code rules in #4 dying down once Charles or William becomes king.
