You may have already known the musical acts, but these movies used their songs to perfection. For this were counting down our picks for the Top 10 Jukebox Movie Musicals. For this list, were taking a look at the best musicals that feature performances or routines set to songs by popular musicians, whether they were performing themselves or not. I'm sorry, but some of these I would not consider jukebox movie musicals-- they don't sing in Saturday Night Fever, Jersey Boys was semi-biographical. I love Purple Rain to death, but it shouldn't have been on this list. It's almost a slap in the face cuz this genre is typically made fun of and made out to not be cool. Also, that movie is semi-autobiographical, so that should've been a disqualification from this list. (Also, you put Prince on any list- put him at #7 if he's not at the top of the list. it's his signature number like Purple is his signature color. With this title, I think of movies like Rock of Ages and Mamma Mia- and it felt like a lot of these were put in to pad the list to get you to 10 because not enough are out there to fill out a whole list.

Singing in the Rain is not in this category. As mentioned, MGM recycled songs not previously used in movies, so this was definitely not a jukebox movie. It was a classic, one of the best musicals ever, but no one had heard these songs before the movie came out. Also, how was The Blues Brothers only a mention? It is THE BEST jukebox movie ever made.

What I hate about 'Mamma Mia' is that all the songs sound exactly like the album versions - what's the point of that? At least 'Across the Universe' and 'Moulin Rouge' did something new with the songs, but there's nothing, repeat, NOTHING on the 'Mamma Mia' soundtrack that you don't already get listening to a 'Best of Abba' CD.

I think we should Update this and do a TOP 20.
ADD:
Dirty Dancing Flashdance Footloose (84) ( though the characters don't do any ACTUAL singing these few do deserve to be in the countdown
Hairspray (88') Cry-Baby (90) The Sapphires (2012) The Blues Brothers Moulin Rouge Sing & Sing 2

Sister Act the movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert (it's more of a musical than Saturday Night Fever. Purple Rain is not a Jukebox musical. I personally wouldn't call Singing in the Rain a Jukebox musical as it recylcled songs no one would recognize away from the film.

Out of these movies on this list, I have only seen Happy Feet, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Sing and Singing in the Rain. I mostly prefer musicals with all or mostly original score and enjoy Jukebox only once in a while. Depending on how familiar I am before with the songs.

Loved Sing, can't wait for its sequel. Also wondering what do you want to see in the sequel? I want to see more character backstories, especially Johnny. I want to know about his mother and his childhood. It would be like Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again with animals.

All the comments about Jersey Boys are total bullcrap! The movie Jersey Boys was the worst movie musical ever made! The Broadway musical was 1000x better than that TERRIBLE movie! I even told one of the actors in the movie how bad it was!

Sing is one of my favourite non Disney animated movies and I also love Mamma Mia but only the sequel, the first one was good but when Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again came out and I watched it, I loved it a lot more than the first one

In a way, the famous Pepsi commercial, starring James Marshall Hendrix, Age 11, is a mini jukebox musical. Purple Haze on the electric guitar, contrasted against Purple Haze on the accordion. That was a close one!

When I saw Jersey Boys (film version, it was an in flight movie and I almost had a, For those of you dancing and singing in the aisle, please sit down and be quite. scenario

Saturday Night Fever should not be on this list. the songs in that movie did not pre exist they were made for the movie and no one sings in it its not a musicL
reply

Across the universe is my favorite movie jukebox musical. And I have plans to make my own jukebox musical, except it is set to the songs of Queen.
reply

Sing should've been on the actual list. And I would've put Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway on the list as well.
reply

School of Rock would be good. Or Tommy. If the Beatles are on this list shouldn't the Who also be on it? Or Pink Floyd's The Wall.
reply

Purple Rain is not a jukebox musical. It's more of a musical because they songs were written and performed for the film.
reply

How is The Wall not on here? Yes, The Wall is technically a musical. It's a rock opera which is a type of musical.

Honorable mentions to Footloose, Top Gun, and Urban Cowboy. Those three films defined music in the early 80s.
