Oh. I would like to add in one more thing. This should be number one, or at least top five. Umbridge does so much gaslighting. That is one thing that stood out to me. This belongs on the list far more than the girly fashion and the silly cough. Gaslighting is nasty business. Of all the books in the series, the fifth one stands out as the most disturbing and depressing. Harry struggles so badly. Umbridge is the defense against the dark arts teacher at the time. So she is most prominent in this book. Her horrible behavior does a lot to lower the tone of the book. A lot of the footage in this video even comes from the movie adaptation of the fifth book. At this point, Harry recently saw Voldemort return with his own eyes. Voldemort even had Cedric murdered. This was the climax of the fourth book. In the fifth book, Harry struggles with the trauma and grief. Umbridge makes an already horrible experience even worse by denying that the event even happened. This is clearly a case of gaslighting. This screws Harry up even more. I think it may be the worst thing Umbridge has ever done, at least from Harry's perspective. This perspective is vital since the story is closely told from his point of view. This may even be worse than the times Umbridge tortures Harry in detention. Physical pain can be less harmful than mental pain. It can depend on the severity though. At least the physical cuts would be easier to heal. The detention has both physical cutting and psychological gaslighting. When I read the book as an adult, I pick up more about the psychology. I better understand how truly nasty Umbridge can be. The detention scene has got to be tough or even triggering for anybody that has done self harm. There is one scene where Harry goes to the wizard hospital to visit Arthur Weasley. This scene is in the book, but was dropped from the movie. There is interesting detail about how the hospital is organized. The top floor is about wizard mental health. It has Lockhart as a patient. I was thinking Harry should turnhimself in. He was struggling so badly, that he might need therapy. He may even need to put his schooling on hold until things get better. That was my interpretation.

She exists at the center of the Venn diagram of psychopathy, sociopathy, and passive aggression (in my non-clinical opinion.
She has the ability to mimic empathy without actually having any; mostly leads a normal life and flies under the radar until she wants to be the very pinnacle of attention; she occasionally loses her shit but rarely; she interrupts, manipulates, controls, weasels and gaslights. but typically all in a socially accepted bureaucratic annoying way. Until she wants to be cruel, which she does in secret.
People hate her because she's a mix of irritating, powerful, and hidden cruelty. AND she is all of those things in a realistic way; people are far more likely in this world to encounter many versions of Umbridge, than they are to ever encounter anyone like Voldemort

If I was professor trellawney on the day I was sacked I would have said to her that if she continues down this path she oh so obviously chose she would be taken hostage by the creatures that they are repressing and asking Harry for help wont help at all!

Umbridge: How loving to see your bright beautiful faces Smiling up at me
Me and Students (in the Students mind me out loud): We are NOT Smiling at you

She was the only one besides Fudge that voted to get Harry expelled. He had no choice but having to do it to save him and Dudley from the dementor attack. In addition, in case you did not know, she was actually the one that ordered the attack!

Voldemort was just a straight up villain like any other villain. We dont normally encounter someone like that in our lives.
Umbridge inspires a certain visceral hatred in us because weve all encountered someone like her in our lives.

You know, I'm not really sure if it's possible or not. But, if they ever get a chance to make a remake/reboot, I wonder if they'll snatch up a Karen from the wild, dress it in pink, plop it in the middle of a set, and say action?

I remember dreading the Order movie after reading the blood ink scene. The book made it so graphic and of course, my imagination was running the whole time.
So glad the movie toned it down.

Hate the character but not the actress! We universally agree that Umbridge is the worse person to ever exist, we should credit the actress who fleshed her out so damn well!

I love cats a lot, but I find Ms. Umbridge's use of collector's plates depicting cute kittens cavorting around on the plates to show how 'sweet' she is repulsive.

Gotta hand it to JK, she actually made a character more vile and cruel than even Voldemort. Even the actress who portrayed her was sickened of her!

Prototypical example of vulnerable/covert narcissism. Unfortunately I am all too familiar with this, as my older sister is one.

You wanna hate her more? I suggest you read the book. The book makes her not so bad in the film (hyperbolic speaking.

It's important to understand that it's ok to hate the character, but it's important to remember you should respect the actor.
