I just found out I was a level 1 on the autism spectrum, I felt somewhat relieved to have an explanation why I struggled for so long in social issues, eye contact, loud noises, food texture. But I tell my parents their response is oh level 1 so youre just like everybody else. Even though I know they meant well, being told that made me feel like they belittled something I took comfort in. I currently deal with anxiety and depression along with my social issues but Ive done so good a job at seeming fine and normal, they dont believe theres anything going on with me.
Theres an idea in everyones head what someone with autism, anxiety, depression looks or acts like. If youve done a job of masking it, people believe youre overreacting. Its only just now that people are feeling more comfortable to be more open with their mental health issues. Oh but dont go telling anyone, or mentioning it, thats something you keep to yourself deep down its just to make sure it doesnt hurt job opportunities, or your image. at least thats what I get told constantly.

Oh boy, y'all did the Golden Girls wrong, at least with Sick and Tired Part 1 and 2. You literally said what the real issue is, which is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which is BIOLOGICAL, NOT MENTAL! They even make that explicitly clear in the episode!
In that section where she gets dismissed by the doctor, you conviently left out the part where Dorothy whips out two letters from psychologists she went to, who ascertained that her symptoms were not mental, rather they were physical
Hell, the Asian doctor at the end even said they'd have to take some blood samples so they would know for sure, for sure that Dorothy had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Real disappointed, especially since a better example would've been Rose having a breakdown and being constantly paranoid after their house was broken into in Season 1, or even her depression when she's trying to find a new job, but nobody's willing to hire her because she's old, also in Season 1!

I love how this list shows how depression can take many forms and be dealt with in a variety of ways. One of the few shows I'd add to this list as either an entry or even as an honorable mention is. House. And not just because of depression. House had a breakdown that had him sent for psychiatric help. It's been years since I watched the show, but I remember thinking that he ought to try and do a self-diagnosis on himself to explain why he behaves the way he does. His manner of coping was self-destructive and socially damaging. It suggests the damage depression can cause if left undiagnosed and untreated.

I love when TV shows or movies tackle mental health issues such as OCD, Autism, PTSD, anxiety, substance abuse, etc. One condition I wish was talked about more would be Tourettes Syndrome, I haven't really seen it represented in a positive, awareness, light, outside of the movie Front Of The Class which I highly recommend! But that is one condition I just wish more awareness was brought too it, the few times I've seen it in TV shows it's usually used as something to make fun of people. And I wish that would change, and yes this is coming from someone who has TS!

The Golden Girls episodes were very good and are worth people being aware of, but its a bit upsetting to see it on this list. Many sufferers of Chronic Fatigue syndrome are told it is a mental disorder that they can overcome through exercise and other methods, whereas its actually a physical biological disorder that means exercise can be harmful. Its good to talk about the episodes but its potentially harmful to frame it as a mental health issue

My sister wound up admitted to a psychiatric ward for a few days with severe PPD verging on psychosis a couple months after her son was born. She had a breakdown and was taken. It was super scary and she wasnt allowed to be alone for several months until she was recovered and wasnt a harm to herself and baby. Everything is great now and my nephew is 5, but it was a scary time for a bit.

Oh yes Michael J Fox was AMAZING on Scrubs!
I also thought not only Bea Arthur but the entire cast especially Estelle Getty were incredible in the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome story, as well as Betty White in the AIDS testing and the addiction storylines. Dorothy giving that monologue at the end to Dr Bud the spud was so righteous

Not even a mention of MASH? The show opened a lot of eyes when it came to PTSD from times of extreme stress. In fact, Alan Arbus has said that his portrayal of Dr. Freedman was so convincing that total strangers would come up to him on the street and start talking about their problems.

There was an episode of Mr. Belvedere, where the show's chiild, Wes makes a friend with an elderly lady. who eventually reveals that she has Alzheimer. Towards the end, her condition worsens and she no longer recognizes Wes. That part had always haunted me.

Mental health is generational, and is rather awesome to see sitcoms tackle these issues head on, especially the classic sitcoms. To know that Scrubs took on OCD in a realistic manner is refreshing because I have a friend with OCD and is also an artistic performer.

i remember crying my eyes out when i had to dump my saved breastmilk because my son had a dairy allergy during my post partum. My husband and stepdaughters looked so worried and sad for me since they knew how difficult breastfeeding was for us (my son and I)

How, how, just how do you not include Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? The whole show is about mental health and living/struggling with borderline personality disorder. There were even some very powerful episodes that addressed suicide. Is it not considered a sitcom?

As a sufferer of OCD myself, it can get really unbearable at times. And the way it's portrayed on _Scrubs_ is not only accurate, but satisfying knowing that people are being made aware of it's existence and seriousness through this show.

If you watch mash I mean really watch it. Especially the later seasons you will see that the show dives deeply into how each person deals with the effects of war. Including calling a psychiatrist on occasion to help them sort out their feelings

I liked that Scrubs portrayed OCD in a realistically nuanced way, showing how hard the condition is to live with. Michael J. Fox was the perfect choice to play Dr. Casey, and shows what a phenomenal actor he is.

I do remember one episode on Saved by the Bell when Jessie pushed herself too far in needing to be the best and resorted to caffeine pills. This too, I wish was followed up on even if just gently referred to.

You should have included MASH. Although there are several episodes dealing with mental health, the finale, when Hawkeye has a nervous breakdown, was exceptional. Today we would have recognized it as PTSD.

The Golden Girls did a great episode about Alzheimers Disease when Sophias friend Alvin had to go away. She had another friend in a terrible nursing home who was in the beginning stages of dementia also

The Great North (2021-) Had a Good One Regarding Absentine matriarch Kathleen Tobin given Beef Tobin's trauma and grief hope she never shows up if Fox still keeps the underrated show

Dorothy's story line shows that you should always stick to your gut feeling whenever you suspect that something is wrong with your health, despite nothing being clearly visible.

One of mental health issues people rarely talked about is chronic depression. I had watched a lot of dramas. Only one series - Chicargo Hope - seemed to dive into the deep end.

Crazy Ex Girlfriend should've made this list
The Final Season really Dives into how important Mental Healthcare is
I mean, they did a whole Musical Number about it

Rose's PTSD after their house was robbed or when Sophia's friend wants to unalive herself due to loneliness would have been better choices for a GG episode for this list.

Ted Lasso does a great job with anxiety. I was going through a rough time with my anxiety when I watched the series and it was a great comfort to me at the time.

Scrubs talk A LOT about mental health so accurately, this is a great show.
Not a sitcom but Doom Patrol is the best serie who talk about mental healness!

I'm glad that Mom stayed on the air so long. Alcoholism has many ups and downs and that show was clear in the number of ways people slip as well as succeed.
