List feels incomplete without mentioning Dan Jansen falling in the 500m speed skating in Calgary the day he lost his sister Jane to leukemia. He fell again in the 1000m. Missed the podium in 1992, missed 500m in 1994 but in the 1000m, finally, a world record and Olympic gold. The sound of an entire arena losing its mind, the image of him on the podium saluting the sky and finally a victory lap with his daughter Jane in his arms in terms of tear jerking Olympic quests, it’s hard to top.

After the US boycott to the 1980 Olympics, Nancy Hogshead had taken a break from competitive swimming to focus on her college education. In 1981, while jogging between campuses she was brutally attacked and rped by two men, leaving her with a fractured skull and broken ribs. Hogshead returned to swimming as a way to vent out her anger in a constructive way and at the 1984 Olympics, she won gold at the 100m freestyle tied with Carrie Steinseiffer.

I would go with Sylvie Frechette and her gold medal at Barcelona in syncro swimming, she had her fiance die by his own hand days before the Olympics started and the judging controversy to boot
