My body positive role models are Tyra Banks, Melissa McCarthy, and Rebel Wilson. Those 3 women show that you can move from the norm and still be beautiful, wanted, and on top. I don't see why society sits there and encourages eating disorders and body shaming. I have lived with anorexia till I met my husband who changed me in a positive way. I have always looked in the mirror and seen a fat person even when I was 110 pounds. I still struggle with that today, but I'm eating more (even though my husband thinks that I should be eating more. I am 34 years old and I would like to tell all of you young girls out there that struggle with eating disorders; it might keep you thin while you're young. However, I have been doing this kind of thing off and on since I was 15 years old and know that as you get older it doesn't matter. I am overweight and only take in around 1, 300 - 1, 500 calories a day. I go to the gym and do workout 10 - 15 hours a week and am still overweight. I messed up my body so much in my younger days with cutting out my food that now I will probably have to see a doctor before I can try to fix what I've done to my body. Other people's hateful remarks about how thin you should be is not worth it. They are not worth ruining the only body you have in this life.

I find 'body positivity' to be an interesting issue. Firstly, I do see the objection that being overweight or obese does increase your risk of negative health outcomes and, more to the point, if you start gaining weight but don't recognise it as a problem until you are very far down the line, it makes it even more difficult to tackle the issue.
That being said, woman are fat shamed so much more than men that I tend to think that, for a lot of people, the 'healthy' thing is just a cover. There are lots of overweight or obese male celebrities whose weight is rarely, if ever, mentioned. And if it is they are more often stereotyped as awkward and cuddly rather than disgusting or 'fat pigs'. That feeds into the whole problem of unrealistic beauty standards for women.
So yeah. Two seperate issues. A. Tackling unrealistic female beauty standards and B. Tackling obesity. Unfortunately, they do come into conflict sometimes. Which is why I get uncomfortable when very large women are paraded as images of 'body positivity' although, obviously, if a female celebrity does happen to be obese it doesn't mean they are obligated to hide away from the world.

The women who make it possible for me to starting to like myself and my body are: Melissa McCarthy, Demi Lovato (and Ashley Graham also. But, note that I said, STARTING to LIKE, and not love. I'm not at that stage yet.
They are beautiful women. Inside and out. They inspire me. They make me a little less insecure.
Those ladies make me hate myself less when I'm depressed.
Like, when I get asked if I'm pregnant, (I'm not, or when my mom or one of my aunts starts to criticise my weight (yes. My mom. Or think about that ONE time when my ex (then my boyfriend) said I was a bit too fat to his liking and not so pretty (this was almost 3 years ago, but I still think about it to this day.
They are rolemodels to me. I also would like to feel pretty and confident and stuff, like they do.
BUT! I'm getting there. Slowly. One day at a time.
Thanks to these women. ALL of these women.
So.
Thank you! Thank you for your strenght and making sure girls know that they're perfect. Just the way they are. And that they don't have to doubt themselves or change.
Thank You

If you were really body positive you would own your weight instead of trying to remove labels. Taking away a label isn't going to change what it is, just what it's called. If you're plus size then own your curves. If you're skinny then own being skinny, but don't dump on anyone else for being labeled a certain size just because you could never get to it. I'm not saying any of these women are or ever did, but really, I'm so sick and tired of people thinking removing or changing the name of something will suddenly wipe away the fact that their fat or remove all their problems. If you really that superficial in a label you may just need to see a therapist and get some help for that.

I hate Lena Dunham. She doesn't have any actual talent. I'm really shocked that such a mediocre person is praised by critics and has Emmys and Golden Globes. She's not a comedian (not funny, not an actress (plays only herself, not a writer (diaries aren't books.
I like Melissa McCarthy but all her heroines are the same, clumsy and vulgar (funny though.
Ashley's face is beautiful, her body isn't. I'm curvy myself but to me curvy is J Lo/ScarJo figure, not Graham's. Sorry but she's overweight.

body positivity is caring for your body and being healthy. as accepting what you can't change. you can't be healthy and obese.
the normal american size is overweight. thats not good
taking care of yourself does mean maintaining a healthy weight.
having more plus sizes models is a very bad and negative thing. encouraging being unhealthy is not good
so sad that so many of these girls are overweight/obese aka unhealhy

51 people have issues with this list. All the women on this list are beautiful and I applaud them for standing up for those who aren't confident enough to do so. Skinny is so overrated. If you have to starve yourself just because you think that people will notice you or applaud you on being beautiful, you are so misguided. Beauty starts with loving yourself regardless of how you look or how others perceive you as being.

Kelly Clarkson, Jessica Simpson, Demi Lovato and Tyra Banks are my favorites. I don't understand why ppl would called Jessica and Tyra fat, but I heard about Kelly after having her child and learning so much about Demi on an MTV special. None of these ladies are overweight, they are strong, smart, beautiful women who are positive role models to every girl.

I feel like Zendaya should have been on this. She may be thin herself, but she is all about being body positive and she just came out with a huge line spanning just about every size. Though she's my age, I see her as a huge role model, also because of her skin. I feel like confidence in your race and who you are is also a form of body positivity

I wish one of the role models were for girls that have skinny bodies with no curves, but they can't gain weight. They aren't starving themselves, but now that body positivity for more bigger and curvier girls is in, a lot of skinny girls get made fun of. Because body positivity isn't just for being big or curvy.

Three things, 1) If your doctor says you're healthy, and you; re happy, other peoples opinions of you don't matter. 2) HAES (Health At Every Size) isn't a good movement; an obese person is just as unhealthy as a person that is severely underweight. 3) Why are there only women on this list?

I think Kate should have been in the top 5 - she actually sued a magazine and won for altering photos, and was also someone who wasnt a perfect size 0 when she stripped down for that famous scene in Titanic when the skinny-rail look was in its height (think Ally McBeal) and unavoidable

I wouldn't Call Demi a positive body role model, yearh she suports people who might be a bit bigger than Hollywood standards, she just recently slamed Taylor Swift for being friends with other skinny female celebrerties by saying it's not normal

Okay Ashley Graham is amazing, but she has the same proportions as thin models and still fits the standards set by society, she had huge boobs, a big butt, and a flat stomach. She's a great role model, but by no means should she have been first.

Body positivity is very important, but there are too many white feminists who lead with a body positive outlook but then exclude other types of bodies and people from the conversation (ei: trans, poc.

Hey
Damn, I am quite skinny myself and like it, but let's all take a minute to admit that Ashley Graham is not a plus size model, she is the ultimate bombshell, inside and out. What more could anyone ask for?

This list did help me feel better about myself, but I was saddened to see that Meghan Trainor was not on the list. She is the celebrity that has most made me feel better about my size!

What you people call plus size in America really confuses me. Where I'm from Ashley Graham would be considered, and is a curvy beauty, there is nothing plus size about her.

I honestly think it would have been a better idea to replace Amy Schumer and Lena Dunham with better role models like Danielle Brooks, Gabourey Sidibe, or even Rebel Wilson

Lady Gaga should have made the list. While herself she is thin, she is all about body positivity and also Lorde, who is one of the most body positive people out there.

Missing from the list are female athletes. Women with physically fit bodies should be seen as positive role models. Especially since they work hard to achieve.

Demi Lovato should not be on this list let alone number two- anyone who says that skinny women are automatically bad role models, is themselves a terrible role model

I don't see why people think McCarthy and Shumer are on here. They use their weight as part of their comedy to make cheap unfunny fat jokes. Rest were great.

Interesting about Hollywood's standards for body image. It's like Marilyn Monroe would be considered 'too fat' today.
