Music goes through cycles and the late '90s and first few years of the 2000s was perfect for boybands and pop music in general. During most other times, however, there's been no more than one or two internationally popular boybands at one time. For instance, during New Kids on the Block's time there were no other boybands that were popular throughout the world (Take That was popular through much of it toward the end of NKOTB's reign but they never had much popularity in the US and Boyz II Men rose up toward the end of NKOTB too and were obviously marketed r&b. We've seen the rise of the Jonas Bros and 1D since the end of the Nsync and BSB era and 1D are still extremely popular despite being on hiatus atm. Kpop has changed things in the boyband landscape more than any other genre of music imo, certainly more than hip hop that isn't marketed at tween girls.

The term boy band sounds so awful. It just implies that it's a group of young pretty boys that just have a couple singers in the group that dance and don't write their music.
When Backstreet Boys yes in the start of their careers they had very little control of what they did. But seeing them today they have come a long way. They write, produce, play Instruments, and dance. They are in charge of their careers and how they want to do things. They have not been in the forefront of the music industry, but they still have fans that love and want to see them. They take their time putting out new music. I think it's by choice, so they don't get burnt out! I'm happy to see them still doing what they love!

WE HAVE BIGBANG. They are revolutionaries in the boyband history. The hip hop boy band. really all man in the world likes them. tons of good qyality music, amazing performances, gifted talents. Really the world must recognize them more. I mean people who writes 'good riddance' or 'I hate boy bands' on this video should listen to their music. it would change your opinions. THEY ARE NOT NAMED THE LEGENDS, THE KINGS OF MUSIC for nothing. I would recommend Loser and Bad boy for start.

Girls will get the shock of their life when a new boy band comes in U. K. or U. S. its not the end before one direction we barely had a boy band incomes one direction now the most successful boy band in history. What Im trying to say is girls there would eventually be a new boy band U. S., U. k. or Korean even that will make our hearts throb.

Boy bands could never happen in America like they used to because most male artists want to be a solo artist. Also there is a general stigma about being a part of a boy band that males don't want to be associated with. Just think about how much hate Justin Bieber got for being a pretty boy with fan girls.

I grew up in Atlanta during the late 90s and early 2000s. I saw Nsync and BSB in 2000/2001 respectively. I do think southern rap or just hip hop in general overshadowed boy bands because I remember listening to Crunk and Screw music and eventually switching to Rock and EDM in 2003/2004.

I don't think it was Hip Hop at all. I think it's a short term generational thing. You get a few strong years and then the fans grow and get bored. well usually. It comes and goes. Hip Hop was due to be big from all corners of USA but boy bands are usually short lived in the modern era

Outkast was, scratch that. IS the bane of my existence. At one single cheerleader competition I heard that like fifteen times. Oh Yeah is just oh so original. I don't care what happened to the boy bands, I'm just glad that something happened to make Outkast go away.

Tbh I like early boybands like from the early 2000s and 2010s I don't like boybands from now 2016-2018 they don't really excite me and I don't like k pop groups. This is just my opinion don't come after me just because of my opinion

The time my friends found NKOTB as teens, I found punk and grunge. And while they don't admit to their teen preferences as adults without an age disclaimer and not knowing better, I can proudly get out my old CDs

Boy bands started to decline when internal members like producers and members leaving, the whole Emo music came and all the anti-pop music like rappers. Music was turning into filth and tried to be dirty.

You forgot about the surge in popularity of rock and metal (especially Nu Metal) thanks to groups like Staind, Korn, Linkin Park, Disturbed, System of a Down, and Slipknot.

Boy bands never disappeared. HOT, G. O. D, Shinhwa, etc. persisted into the early 2000's. And then Super Junior emerged around 2003. Then BIGBANG exploded onto the scene.

Black boy bands are barely mentioned in this clip, they ruled the 70s and 80s until white and now asian bands appropriated their style from 90s to now.
Hip hop is next

why was new kids on the block barely mentioned in this whole video? and why only Pop boy bands? Where's the New Edition Boys II Men love for instance?
reply

lol when they put Eminem in Missouri (just because he was born there) when he literally associates himself with Detroit for about everything.
reply

Boyzone, Westlife, Take That, Blue, The Wanted, JLS, One Direction, 5SOS. not a prominent but still the big boybands from my lifetime.
reply

nah. Boy Bands live hard and die fast and then rise like the phoenix and repeat the cycle. they'll be back in force soon enough
reply

I loved boy bands! I miss them and will still rock them. however, I do like Outkast and hiphop. Petey Pablo was one of my faves.
reply

The members of nsync plays instruments while JC Chasez & Justin Timberlake are both songwriters. So much of checking facts first.
reply

Alternative rock, punk rock and pop artists focus on solo careers killed the boy bands. Also the rise of Eminem and 50 cent.
reply

Hey Eminem's hip hop roots are from Detroit! Yes he was born in Missouri, but he was raised in Detroit Michigan!
reply

0: 22 - More like 2002.
Justin released Justified in Nov, 2002 so it was done once he left Nsync, lol.

reply

I DON'T KNOW WHERE you have been in the LAST 7 YEARS. but have you EVER heard of the boy band BTS?
reply

reply

Why did you show Eminem over Missouri. He's from Michigan. Which is north of where you showed it.
