Giant Rescue Horse Who Worked For 20 Years Finally Retires We had an Amish-broke 18 hand Belgian/Clydesdale cross who was so messed up when he came to us that you couldnt toss a lead over his neck, couldnt show him tack or hed bolt, and couldnt use anything remotely resembling a whip. After a few months of teaching him that humans werent all out to get him and giving him all the love we could, he became one of the best mounts we ever had. He never pulled again, but hed give you a ride anywhere if he was bribed with enough cookies. Lol. He was like a big dog, hed beg, hed talk to you, and hed nuzzle his thanks whenever he was cut loose in the pasture. Died at 30, I still miss that one-ton sweetheart.

It's utterly inconceivable to me, to receive the best part of 20 years of back breaking, bone crunching labor from a loyal, dedicated Draft horse who toiled the soil on my land for 10 hrs per day, only to commit the ultimate betrayal by selling him into an abattoir for slaughter. Especially as Anish are renowned for the extensive land they own that they could have easily set this unfathomable beauty to pasture smdh. It's unfathomable to me at the total absence of any sense of anything for a horse who's given you 20 bloody years of hard labor. Ugh.

We rescued two of the big Amish draft horses from a slaughter auction a few years ago. We named them Jake and Elwood. They were in horrific condition, but we were able to give them a few good years of retirement before their age caught up to them. It’s beyond sad that these gentle giants give their whole lives working for humans and then are dumped like trash when they no longer can perform.

It astonishes me how much people love animals aside from humans. Listen to how carefully and tone she uses to talk about the animal. You never hear any of these tones or words being spoken to human beings that are homeless or struggling in life a lot of the times.
These animals get treated royalty compared to humans that really do need it. It's unbelievable and scary at the same time.

When I lived in England my grandmother had a retired timpany drum horse and he was as big as Big John. His name was Duke. I used to have to climb on the tractor to get on him. He had been retired due to his front fetlocks being too straight. He was loads of fun too. On the beach I let him. loose for a little bit and he walked over my foot. Thank God for sand. XD

These are the same beautiful horses who pull the carriages in Charleston SC in 95 degree F heat and 90% humidity. One poor horse just did not want to move, the carriage driver just kept cracking the whip on him. My heart ached for the horse.

The Amish are notoriously bad to their animals. I feel so sorry for their horses, dogs and all of their animals. The Amish run them into the ground and are so unloving. They care and regard they show their animals is out of the 1800s.
reply

This is disconcerting and saddening.
I would have thought the Amish would have been more caring in their treatment of animals.
Anyway, I’m happy to see him happy, and hope he lives at least another 20 years.

Thank you so much for rescuing these horses, to save them from slaughter! Humans can be so ignorant of our beautiful animals. They deserve life shown with love and kindness.

Me an Irishman now wanting to pick up about 100 beers to go on the session with a giant horse. Lad looks like he could put away about 6 pints in a minute when he's taking it slow

The Amish should not be allowed to own horses, the way they use them, abuse them then throw them away is disgusting. Thank you for rescuing this big beautiful boy

Every work horse deserves a happy retirement. Thank you for rescuing Big John. He’s magnificent and I can tell he’s really appreciative that you took him in.
reply

No one here has the courage to mention that the horse was kept in such brutal conditions by no one else than a fascist Zionist and next they are coming for you

Horses, big or small are so kind & gentle & do not deserve to be badly treated, I hope Big John is still enjoying His Beer & retirement.

I’m shocked the Amish would abuse an animal
so beautiful and wonderful as this magnificent horse. So glad you rescued him!

That's all any guy needs when he retires. Room to run with the boys, a beer to chase down the hay and a lot of scratches & kisses.
reply

This is perfect. He's got his heroes, his friends, beer, freedom and a great life. He can't help dishing out the kisses he's that happy.
reply

It is astounding that the Amish do not seem to take better care of their horses, since horses are integral to Amish lifestyles.
reply

For anyone who thinks the Amish are 'quaint' and kindly, this should open your eyes. They are notorious for their awful puppy mills
reply

Thank you for your great kindness. Once again, evidence of the cruelty of practicing Christians, in this case the Amish.
reply
