We met up with Lillard at videogamesnewyork ahead of the Scream 7 premiere, to take a walk through his gaming memories from getting destroyed by Dragon's Lair at the arcades when he was a kid, to getting carried by his son in Apex Legends. I met Matthew in a games store I was working in Wellington, New Zealand. This was in 2003, and he was here to film a movie. He bought an Xbox with Hitman, because his American one he brought with him wouldn't work here.
He looked exhausted, so I didn't bother him much. He was wearing a Scooby Doo jacket, and I did ask about that, and he said it was hard to film with nothing there.
Anyway, nice dude. Really tall.

That's something I'd forgotten about arcades, you sometimes measured how worthwhile a game was to play by how hard it was to get to play. If people were frequenting a machine best you could do was look over (or under) people's shoulders, assuming you were too intimidated to slap a quarter on the corner of the screen to claim next spot
Fun! Can't wait to see more of these

You should do more of these. I feel the actors would be far more open and honest about games than they are in the Criterion closet where I genuinely feel a lot of them pick out black & white Danish arthouse films just to come across as deep and intellectual. Like, pick out Dudes Where's My Car and quote and then - movies don't always have to be profound.

Dude I would love to play a game of fifa against Shaggy that would be awesome. I was pretty good at fifa but I haven’t played fifa since 2016 lol that’s when fifa was awesome for me till they added other stuff to it. I just loved to pick a team and let’s get it lol woulda always win with Real Madrid, Man U and West Ham

Roaming the streets all night is what kids are supposed to do. That said I'm not a father lol! But I am sad for the youth of today that will grow up under the spectre of the pandemic's large black shadow.
But I'm so grateful i grew up in the 80s and 90s because we had it good, my friends. We had it incredibly good.

I went there and got a foreign version of a game that they said had english support when it didn't. The people who work there are not even knowledgable of what they own. I even researched and the internet was wrong about it too, so I wasted my money unless what I got becomes hard to find, which I doubt.

I'm currently re-watching Twin Peaks season 3 and Matt Lillard really kills any time he's in a scene. The interrogation scene is great.
I loved that Wing Commander game as a kid so I was ecstatic when the movie was announced. I saw it in the theaters as a little kid. It wasn't good but Lillard rules.

Oh man, I went to a place in Seattle kind of by the University district like 10 years ago and it was very similar to this. I think it was a pawn shop that just had a bunch of electronics. I think it was somewhere close to pink elephant or pink gorilla or whatever that was called.

Regardless of my own opinions on the current state of the Scream franchise, I love Matthew Lillard and I like seeing more of him. I also really enjoy learning about people's gaming interests and I feel like this is a great idea for a series! I'm excited to see more of this!

That Overwatch disc is a glorified coaster right now because the game is free. Why are they even selling it at this point For the old legendary skins that comes with it (does that even work anymore) Also, sorry, Matt, you can't buy Apex Legends because it's free to play.

I'd rather play a game with a genuinely nice, pleasant, funny person who's not a L33T gamer but is trying, working with teammates etc. than someone who's good at a game but thoroughly unpleasant - not that those two are necessarily mutually exclusive.
reply

Well you didn't (buy) Apex Legends. Nobody did. It's free to play. Lol. But the story is still the same. I'm sure he was instantly better. Kids are instantly good at games now. They love to talk about our boomer reflexes. And I'm not even a boomer.

Lol he is like no one will care about this! and he is talking about Fifa franchise mode which is all anyone who plays Fifa cares about and a lot of people play Fifa. He has his pacman gameplay on lockdown though, it is all about the jukes.

Isn't Overwatch on XBO entirely unplayable I guess it still has value to full physical collections, but still feels weird to be worth $10 as every physical copy ever released is also unplayable and only worth it for collectors.

I actually have a soft spot for Wing Commander. It was a very rushed and overly condensed story, and the kilrathi looked AWFUL, but it was still entertaining, and at the end of the day that's the most important part for me.
reply

Well, I did went to theaters to see him in that film. So it's not a complete mess. If I'm not mistaken, Freddie Prince said, MATHEW convinced him to do that film because WE GET TO HAVE ACTION FIGURES! He's a wise friend.

I'm actually watching the first Scooby-Doo movie with my almost 3-year-old son now. We love that movie together. You're super cool, thank you Shaggy. Like, you're super tubular dude and like way far out man!
reply

Every time he shared a gaming memory and said no one cares about this he was totally wrong. I really cared about his stories haha. They were terrific. Thank you for sharing your love and enthusiasm for gaming!

I've never been an online gamer. Dunno, I don't have a competitive bone in my body. I'd much rather couch co-op some good old Gears of War or just get lost in Elder Scrolls or Fallout on my own.
reply

I know he is someone I have never talked to and probably never will, but I wish he was my friend, he just seems like a down to earth cool guy with great advice. Plus dude can act his ass off haha.
