You should know that just resetting the check engine light doesn't fix the problem. Its common sense. Also, keep in mind that the engine is very complex so it takes time for the tech to diagnose it. This costs money. Again, simple common sense.
I've never heard of a mechanic dirtying up an air filter. Lol. Maybe showing you an old air filter bit not rolling it in dirt.

Btw, standard spark plugs, non-platinum/iradium should be replaced 30k miles. Look in the owners manual. I replaced mine on 98 sentra and went up 6mpg. My dad's truck with 167k miles. The spark plug gap was almost 0. 080, about twice out of spec causing very sluggish response and poor mpg.

Spark plugs service is not the same on all vehicles, check your owner's manual. Don't listen to this advice. Depending on your vehicle it varies from 35000 miles to 100000 miles.
