The Importance Of The Makeover Scene In So Many Big Screen Movies.
The transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful swan is something thats been popular in movies since Cinderella summoned her Fairy Godmother to send her to the ball. Whether its a makeover montage think Clueless, Mean Girls, and The Princess Diaries or a shy girl trying to disguise herself like Hilary Duff in A Cinderella Story transforming into someone else seems to be the way to go when it comes to getting what you want.
These makeover movies have a lot in common, from the protagonist wanting to escape her life or a label to her eventual realization that beauty is much more than skin deep. They also share some of the same things holding them back like Mia Thermopolis frizzy hair and oversized glasses. But while these makeover movies might start out stereotypical, they often show us that improving your life comes from the inside, not the outside. With the help of modern fairy godmothers, characters like Cher Horowitz try to grant wishes to those they view as lessattractive, thinking that itll definitely make their lives better. But nothings that easy. From The Hunger Games to Shes All That and even Captain America, being transformed is something that society insists we must do. Thankfully some movies, like Shrek, Shes The Man and Legally Blonde have put this to the test by proudly declaring that who you are is beautiful. Heres how the transformation trope works out in some of our favorite films, and what it teaches us about ourselves.
