LOL both Black Panther and GOTG are in this list. You really don't miss squeezing in your MCU fanaticism whenever you get the chance. Realistically, if any MCU movie exceeded expectations, it was Winter Soldier (and Iron Man, which is on this list, but shouldn't be in the top 10.
Also, Top Gun: Maverick should be in the top 10. As a Tom Cruise fan, even I was surprised by the level of success it achieved. Failing to mention its Oscar Best Picture nomination was a glaring omission, especially since it deserved that nomination a million times more than Black Panther did.
Aside from Winter Soldier, other glaring omissions in this list:
Die Hard
Lethal Weapon
Beverly Hills Cop
Godzilla Minus One
Wonder Woman
Tropic Thunder
Crazy Rich Asians
Zootopia
Mission Impossible: Fallout - no one expected it to become the best action movie of 2018, but it did
Parasite - becoming the first ever non-English Oscar Best Picture winner is the very embodiment of exceeding expectations
Aquaman - making over a billion $ despite the obvious bias RT critics have against the DCEU is exceeding expectations on a galactic level
The Dark Knight - the biggest omission considering how it ended up being the greatest comic book movie of all time
One more thing. While Fury Road and 21 Jump Street are good movies, you overrate and overhype them way too much.

I worked at the movies when Slumdog Millionaire came out. Nothing has compared to that phenomenon since. It was expected to be in one small theater for a total of 3 weeks like most independent films. It was moved to the second largest theater and not only outsold Twilight, it stayed at the theater for nearly 4 months, twice as long as Twilight. It was bringing in sold out theaters weeks after it was released because word of mouth would not stop. It was a wonderful slow burn and a perfect reminder that you don't need to get records breaking opening weekends to sustain the industry, just write something good.

Thank you for the update, WatchMojo! 1: 36 I remember E. T. being huge back in 1982. I was a kid back then, and there were E. T. merchandises in just about everything -- even a telephone. One of the best thing to wait for, back in the 80s was a new Steven Spielberg movie being released in every couple of years. That was awesome. The 80s had the best movies, music, friendlier society, etc. There was a constant cold war scare, but other than that. I think that was the best time, ever.

What I would’ve assumed would be number 1 wasn’t even on this entire list. Paddington!
The memes of creepy Paddington, the fact that Paddington had been recast, an unwanted rehash of a beloved property - all recipes for a disaster. I’d argue that Paddington and it’s sequel are the greatest family movies of the 21st century.

It is a hard list to fill out but there were a lot of modern movies there. The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory should have been on it. They became cult classics that are still watched by children to this day even though they had little initial box office success.

I never thought of Erik Killmonger as a villain. Sure, he's the antagonist, but his motives are inspired and righteous.
The action of John Wick was definitely a selling point, but not the only one. The world-building and presentation were fascinating.

What about The Hunger Games The book was a bestseller, but it started out with a budget of $80 million and it brought home a lot more than thatalong with its sequels and the prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Phil Lord and Chris Miller gave us.
21 Jump Street
The Lego Movie
Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse
Sony should just let them in charge of their Marvel movies, because they're the only ones that know what they're doing

Road To Perdition (2002) Just Saw A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood (2019) and Tom Hanks deserves the the title of America's Dad unlike Bill Cosby this early 2000's Graphic Novel film was better than I expected

John Wick, a man who can literally kill you with a book.
District 9 and Planet of the apes were amazing. I love how in D9 they made it like a live footage and interviewing stuff. almost like its legit and real.

5. It also didn't help that this film was Sony's animated follow-up to the universally despised The Emoji Movie. At least the company seems to have learned from that misfire.

I love how the story of Rocky shows similarities with the production of the movie: both of them are underdog stories which will inspire generations to come. Best movie ever made

Wonka, JUMANJI welcome to the Jungle, World War Z, Frozen, Crazy Rich Asians, those were films for various reasons I was expecting to hate. But I ended up liking all of them.

If the point is exceeding expectations, and Paranormal Activity is (even if by 'some metrics') the most profitable movie ever made, how is it not #1

Black panther was ok. Great villian and Chadwick was awesome but had some bad cgi and it felt like it was more phase 1 quality not phase 3

Surprised Prey didnt make the list. Could have easily been a massive dud or shameful depiction of Native Americans. It was good, delivered.
