Hairdresser reacts to extreme diy relaxer fails! Levi: I've been relaxed since I was a child, and my whole life I have struggled with dry & uneven & brittle hair. It never grows past my shoulders. Last year I decided to go natural, so I chopped off my hair and went natural for 6 months. It was so difficult to adjust to having a short afro. I felt so unattractive. I also never wear wigs/weaves (for a couple of reasons) so I was stuck with my super short 4c hair (which didn't suit me. I looked very masculine) and I didn't even want to leave my house or see my boyfriend. After 6 months I finally broke and went back to relaxers. In a way, going back to relaxers was a relief, but the damage it does to my hair just sucks as well. Sometimes I wish I had stayed natural, because MAYBE I would feel beautiful in 5 years time when it finally grows long, but it really was a mental struggle. It's so frustrating either way. Idk what to do with my hair.

There is many reasons why people feel so strongly connected to our hair. It holds our DNA, our history, and our memmories. I have a thyroid disorder where at times I loose over 1/2 my hair. If you choose to cut off your hair vs that choice being taken from you. huge difference! It makes me remember how Natives felt & continue to feel, when held down and their hair cut off for the sake of Colonization, humiliation, and bullying. Also domestic abuse survivors feeling a desire to cut off their hair, after being grabbed by it or dragged by it. I LOVE cutting off all my hair when it starts to fall out or when I want a change. Even though I know my hair does not define me. it still is emotional when that power and choice is taken.

I wont relaxer shame, I will say I wish parents didnt relax there kids hair like super young. They dont understand the risk. BUT! Its your kids do your own thing, its your right I am natural, have been natural for about 10 years. I had a horrible experience with a relaxer (done at a salon) that resulted in chemical burns and multiple areas of damage and breakage. I have had moments in my natural hair journey that Ive wanted to go back to a relaxer but I am too traumatized Now I have a 7 year old daughter and learning my hair has helped me take care of her hair. As well as reach her to love the hair as it grows out of her scalp. Once shes older she can do whatever she wants

I was always told to wait 2 weeks to relax your hair after bleaching the hair. I'm just glad I been natural for years after learning on coloring blonde broke my hair off in 2010 and I started fresh and new. I don't use permanent color and relaxer anymore. Only vegan based semi permanent color mask when I do use color on my hair. Oh and I went to hair school back in the 90's. And I remember one of my friends having a bad chemical reaction to relaxers and that made me stop using them. It was doing something to her brain. Smh. But she is living n is well. This was over 20 years ago

the STRENGTH to look at what just happened and say welp, this is what it is. i'll do better next time is awesome. both of these beautiful ladies went through every stage of grief with their hair and came out stronger. hair is such an important part of a lot of people's identity and security, but it's also good to realize that it's just hair. you are still you and you are still beautiful no matter what your hair looks like

When I was younger I thought the relaxer cream in my moms cabinet was leave in conditioner so I did my hair that night. When my mom came back home in the morning she was screaming waking up my sister in the process. I was very confused and she told me to quickly shower or my hair would fall out. End of the story my hair didnt maybe the relaxer was old I did have straight pieces but it mustve been from earlier damage

Ok, I do my own relaxer, every time. I use the normal strength. I apply, rinse and dry with a tee shirt. I then apply mayonnaise!
Yes, mayonnaise. I leave it on for 20 or 30 minutes under a sit down dryer. I then put on the conditioner that comes with the relaxer and put on a satin cap and go to bed.
The next day I style as usual. I keep it moisturized every day and night.

These comments are I didn't know SO MANY people don't read the instructions before putting relaxer in their hair. This is why I go to professional because I don't have the patience to read the instructions and have no faith in my skills since I didn't read the instructions. I will go to someone who know how to do it instead

The knowledge on this process was a tad bit lacking but nonetheless this was extremely entertaining to watch for someone who is very well versed in relaxers lol. Brads reactions are hilarious! If you need true education on what to do when trying to relax natural Afro hair, this is not the educational video you need

last girl honestly looks soooo cool and elegant with her shaved head. i know it wasn't her ideal and i was seriously feeling her pain as she was shaving the last of it off, but i hope she knows/knew she was still looking beautiful. sincerely hope she's gotten her hair to a place where she's content with it again.

I feel for the first young lady. I've actually watched her video. Not only was her hair dry and brittle, I believe she was also going through post partum shedding.
But I feel her, as moms we get so caught up in taking care of our family, that we tend to lose ourselves in a way.

I relaxed my hair once, and then i went to the beach. BAD BAD IDEA it destroyed my hair, i lost almost 20cm because of breakage
But i took really good care of it the following years and they grew back even longer than before
Soo it sucks but don't give up on your hair

I know your hair got ruined but you look gorgeous without it. Honestly! Even a simple buzz cut all over you would rock it big time. Sorry you had to go through this though I can't even imagine: ( both ladies look stunning.
