As a girl who have been doing curly styling her hair for over 10 years. There are many ways to get nice curls. But I like the easy quick one. Brush and detangle in the shower with the conditioner or a mask it's much better and faster than a leave in. Just put a bathrobe on and skip the towel. Do your styling and products. I like less products too. Leave in foam and gel. Then drying you will have to play with it. Personally I might put a microfiber towel on. But a lot of the time I will go to drying and here's the time saving trick. Buy a hooded blow dryer attachment. Do the flobbing technique with the hood aka get your hair upside down there and turn on the blow dryer. Gives results that are very close to diffusing but with less effort. I usually have it on while I do my makeup. Which makes drying soaking wet hair much easier plus all the hair is drying at the same time. Sometimes you will have weird hair pieces but you will figure it out and know how to avoid them or fix them

My tip for people who want to wear their hair curly is to take the time to figure out a good enough version of your routine. The routine you do when you're running out the door or when you shower at night and don't want to diffuse your hair or you don't feel like brush styling it. Like, could my hair look better if I took the time to brush style it, apply products, and diffuse it at night after I take my shower Yes. But do I want to do all that considering I'm often washing my hair at 11: 00pm Hell no. Do I want to completely rewet and restyle my hair in the mornings after sleeping on it wet Also no. So there's the ideal routine I do if I have time or if it's an occasion I want to look really really nice for, and then there's the routine I do most often that's like two products max and minimal styling. And if my curls are kind of wacky and my hair is a little frizzy and I have to restyle my bangs in the morning then that's fine, good enough.

I have waves that border on curls and my routine has simplified a LOT from where i started.
Brush/detangle in the shower, never use the brush again. I find not brush styling gives me bigger clumps, and personal preference!
Leave in conditioner when my hair is still dripping wet in/from the shower, scrunch generously.
Towel scrunch with microfiber until its about 20% dry.
Add curl cream (kristin ess one is a lovely balance of sticky and soft)
Lastly I do gel in varying amounts depending on humidity, and then scrunch some more until dry enough to live my life. I eventually shake out my roots but i dont get much of a cast with the gel I use.
For me, simple is best!
I hope you find a routine that works for you! The difference in this video alone is so cool to see. Thank you for the side by side testing.

I think one thing people tend to forget about natural curls and waves is that they're not perfect. There's frizz, there's a part of the head where the curls have a different pattern, some parts held the shape longer, others don't hold a curl for nothing. And that's the beauty of it. Everyday that you style your hair it will look different from the previous wash, because your hair is doing what it wants. And between washes, the frizz and volume make the hair bigger, fuller and prettier. In my opinion, that's my favorite part of natural curled (or waved) hair, knowing that every time your hair looks different from previous moments. So Kayley, please don't stress with what's the best routine for your hair, enjoying all the differents aspects the hair shows for each routine is the fun in it

I have a similar hair type to you and one thing I’ve found is how you diffuse can make a huge difference on how the waves turn out. One thing that’s helped me is hover diffusing or air drying a little before going in with the pixie diffusing. Another thing I do is diffuse upright for a while and then flip my head completely upside down and diffuse for a while. Really helps the waves not get too wonky and the upside down helps so much with volume. Lately I’ve been loving a quicker routine where I micro plop and/or full plop and then pixie diffuse for just a bit, then air dry the rest of the way, or you can do most of the way and then diffuse a little more.

We have very similar hair, if you want to try mine it would be detangle in the shower with conditioner and a lot of water. Then put it up in a towel to get out of the shower and dry and dressed. towel off and saturate hair with water, gel combed through in the layers, squish, mousse over all prayer hands style and squish, squish with towel and plop and then if I have time air dry if not upside down diffusing on cold making sure to turn on and off the blow drier when hair is in the bowl. Oh and a stand for your hairdryer is amazing, then you can sit down to diffuse and scroll on your phone or something just set a timer for when to move your hair in and out

This was such an insightful video! I love that you tried different variables and didn't change too much per try.
I've been struggling with my hair for years now. Before I knew it's wavy I just had a frizzy mane and that was my life. Now I'm trying to maintain it and tried so many wavy and curly methods and started to figure out certain things my hair likes and doesn't. But my main struggle is the next day: if I brush it, it just flattens out and becomes wavy frizz over the day - if I don't brush it, it's a tangly mess. How do you do second or third day with wayvy hair

I love this type of side by side testing video! And I appreciate that you went in stages rather than trying completely different things all at once - I may have to do the same for my hair. What generally works for me is Very Very Wet curls, and I haven't quite figured out the best way to dry them, because plopping seems to have introduced more frizz and broken up the clumps, but maybe I'm just not doing it right. I would love to see (and try) some experiments trying products at different stages of the routine or in different order, I haven't figured that out for myself at all.

This video makes me so happy! I've really struggled with definition and consistentcy with my type2 hair, so this really gave me a few new things I wanna try!
If it's ok to ask, I'd love to see an update video in a couple months to see your updated routine, and maybe also curl refreshing on days 2 and 3
Also, do you sometimes air dry or always diffuse I rarely have time to diffuse and I wander if that's my problem.
Thanks a bunch for this! Always love watching your stuff!

Great job getting a handle on that wrapping twirl technique (pun slightly intended! I’m happy you gave brush styling another chance! My suggestion is to try adding your gel/mousse to the hair before using the bounce brush this next time. I feel it locks in the product between the strands so I get a better cast and wave/curls that last for more days. I love that you always approach your testing with a scientific method, limiting the variables each time.

I wonder if you skipped the plopping, if you’d get more volume. I always microplop with a cotton tshirt to get excess water out, and then immediately dry it with a diffuser, with my head upside down. I think this gives more root volume.
I also use hairspray towards the end at about 75% dry. I dry to 90-95% dry then when 100% dry I scrunch out the crunch. So you could take a similar amount of time by doing the waiting at the end, not during plopping.

I forgot I commented on the last video so I got a jump scare when you showed my tip about spiraling! Even further into that--brush through the section with tension like you learned, but then just use the handle like a curling wand, don't try to use the brush part at all when you're doing the spirals. You know how to use a curling wand--same idea! Like just use your hands to wrap the section around the handle, don't catch the ends on the brush.

part of the fun and the frustration of finding the routine to suit ur texture is understanding how ur hair behaves and what products it likes and dislikes! I have wavy hair but it's fine so I can't use any curl creams or wet brush styling methods bc my waves fall completely flat, so i use mousse and gel instead and it works wonders! I love love love a spray-on hair oil too to get rid of the gel crunch, my fav one is by Pantene: )

Consider a using a lightweight hard hold gel. Ouidad (red bottle) or AG Liquid Effects are my favorites. Also waiting until the hair is 100% dry before scrunching out the cast will make your waves hold their shape longer and allow more days between washdays. I find success when I wash before bed but don't scrunch out the crunch until the next day. Voss the Curl Boss has a video course that I've been wanting to take.

I have fine hair and I always style on damp hair, nor soaking wet. I also always brush style with my products in. I also don’t plop for 20 or 30 minutes. Instead, I micro plop which means gently scrunch ing your hair with your microfiber towel to remove the excess water and then apply another thin layer of gel and scrunching that in before diffusing. My hair dries quickly and comes out defined and voluminous.

Im loving this series! Some ideas you can try:
Foam at the roots for volume
Oil after leave in and before gel
The bowl method
Finger rolling or coiling
For a not super wavy more soft some curl cream or wave spray and air dry
If you're down to try new brands kinky curly knot today leave in works super well on wavy hair! Their curling custard is also pretty good but it has a learning curve

Try hammock diffusing. I have a looser curl pattern and it made a big difference. It’s a mix between hover diffusing and pixie diffusing. I use either a towel to hold my curls up or another diffuser and then hover diffuse. You’re holding your curls up so they don’t stretch out but not touching them as much like in pixie diffusing. Pixie diffusing always gave me the wonkiest curls.

This was such a helpful breakdown! If anyone here is looking to elevate their beauty beyond just looks. like really tap into something more feminine, soft, and powerful. I highly suggest The Forbidden Art of Majestic Beauty. It’s unlike any other book I’ve read. It gets into scent, mystery, poise, and how to become unforgettable without saying much. It’s subtle but so effective

I would love to see you try the denman brush! I found that this brush made my waves on the stringy side because you are stuck with how narrow the grooves are. I found that the denman brush smoothes it out and promotes bigger 'clumps'. It's a bit easier to do to the curl wrap, too. Keep going! Embracing wavy/curly hair is such a worthwhile journey, you're doing great: )

I think we have similar wave patterns and hair type. When I take a shower, inside the shower, with soaking wet hair I add my curl cream, then detangle. Still inside the shower I add my mousse (I also use the NYM one) and gel. I then plop and hover diffuse my hair. I find putting my hair in the diffuser makes my ends curl in funky weird directions. Hope this helps!
