I always curl my hair with a regular shmegular iron and then basically wrap it around my finger and clip it up to cool. If I want it to last really well I prep my hair by washing it with the ouai clarifying shampoo and the fine hair conditioner, since I have very fine hair, then I add a tiny bit of their leave in conditioner and a volume mousse and dry it with a blow dryer, so far every mousse seems to be the same. then I curl it at 190 degrees celsius and clip it and immediately spray it with some hair spray after I clip up a section. If I want it to last forever for a very special occasion I add the hairspray beforehand and then curl it, but I don't think it's recommended so try at your own perril. Anyways I let my hair cool for as long as I can, usually no more than 30 minutes since I am always running late and then once I let my hair down I look like shirley temple. I will then kind of run my fingers through it very carefully and try to get it into the desired shape and then spray the shit out of it. That will usually last me 6-8 hours if I don't wear a hat.
Edit to this: It does look pretty wrapped with my technique, but I don't mind that since I like to dress vintage and it just goes with the whole look.
Also congrats to Anna-Laura. It is crazy to me that she is having a baby! I have been around since you helped style her hair for some high school dance.

I am a huge fan of heatless curling, especially an overnight wet set with foam curlers for a vintage look. My hair is very thick, very straight, and colour-treated but moderately healthy. I don't bleach, and I use a max 20 volume developer with my vivid red permanent colour. Any heated curl method inevitably pulls itself straight within hours, even though my hair is only shoulder length, whereas a full set of foam curlers lasts me several days. This method starts with extremely tight curls, but relaxes gradually over time, and honestly looks great each day. I use my trusty Suavecita styling spray and sleep with my hair in a silk bonnet at night to protect the curl. Thanks for showing us so many tips and methods!

This came at the best time. I had a baby in 2020 and once I got passed postpartum I went into perimenopause. Suddenly my hair changed over night. I went from having curls for days to them only lasting an hour. Your list of types: I'm all. Stick straight, thick and fine. I am refusing to dye my hair. I' going gray and love my natural tinsle. I also kept my hair blonde most of my life and am enjoying being brunette and I get it trimmed every 2 months, so it's very healthy hair. I did go with a 90s inspired bixie back in September. Because I was just wearing it up in a ponytail and got sick of not being able to style it. The bixie has been working so good. But still the curls fall out.

As a fellow scientist (as someone who wields the scientific method as wonderfully as you should be called) I am always thrilled with your technical videos, and it only gets better! I'd watch any and everything you deem interesting
If you ever feel that masochistic need neurospicy scientists often do to learn weird and curious things, I'd recommend Design of Experiments, a field that studies ways to evaluate how factors influence a certain response, and how to combine them in order to save time and resources and increase accuracy.
Anyway, always here to support and cheer you on! Lots of love for the whole family

What an informative video! I have long, straight hair, and I gave up heat tools 5 years ago in favor of a heatless curling ribbon. I can get my heatless curls to last 2, sometimes 3, days if I pin my hair up in a loose bun while I sleep. It's so much faster to wrap my hair around the ribbon than to use heat tools (5 minutes vs. 20 minutes, and it takes just 30 seconds to unwrap in the morning and have perfect curls. And there's no risk of burning myself, which I used to do a lot with irons and wands

I need to know more about how to pick good styling products. I honestly don't understand the difference between gel and mousse and then how to use hairspray that doesn't make my hair feel stiff and terrible. I see people online all the time that have these bounceable, touchable curls and they don't look like they are coated in hairspray. I've figured out shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in conditioner. But I am so inexpert at understanding when and how to use styling products.

SO excited to see this video! My hair has never held a curl (pin straight, super fine, and very healthy. humidity will cause baby hairs to curl up a touch but otherwise it just creates frizz) Mousse texturizing spray while wet, plus a combo texture and hold hairspray after has been my KEY. Though I do remember college days of spraying my hair with straight hairspray before curling to try and get some grit to keep the curls in place lmao

I’d love a video on different types of heartless curls (including old school rollers) and different heatless curling methods vs using hot rollers or curling iron. I think sometimes I get so overwhelmed looking at different heatless curling methods. I want to stick to rollers, but I have noticed it’s harder to find tutorials of people using traditional rollers.

I have very curly hair that ironically doesn't hold a heat-styled curl at all. There have been a few times professional stylists have tried to use hot tools on areas of my hair to get the pattern to match, and the curls fall straight quickly and require constant touch-ups to stay in place. I've chocked this up to my hair being very healthy.

Happy Birthday Kayley. I would like you to have the very best of birthday's in 2026 that you can possibly have because that's what is most important on a birthday is to live your best life on that day every year starting with 2026. Everyone should spend their birthday's with family and friends.

I think the slightly damaging product exists in the form of lightening / blonde sprays. Of course does not work for every hair color but my hair is very similar to yours and I give myself the littlest bit of lighter ends like went to the beach and the waves / curls hold better

I had a talk with my hairstylist a while back about this and she said my hair is too healthy and if I want my hair to hold a curl I need to damage it. But in the next breath she told me I’m not allowed to do that though and she said she forbids me from damaging my hair

Great video! It was nice to see some things I’ve noticed over the years confirmed and some new things to try: )
Would love to see a video comparing different types of curling iron metals and different types of tools you can use to curl your hair.

My hair is fine, medium length, virgin and healthy. It’s never held a curl well. I have the best luck when I’m holding my hair on the iron for longer (like 10 seconds. It’s not great for my hair, but I never do it more than once a week.

Yeah but those are just extensions hanging up. On our hair we are pretty much constantly moving our heads and the heat from our heads is a factor also. Those are a couple reasons why our curls are falling so fast too.

I'd love a video about heatless curling methods but using diffrent styling products. Most heatless curling tutorials/tests I see don't use styling products for hold or to help form a curl and I think there's potential.

Your hair is giving Green Sheet Days in the best way possible it's making me so nostalgic and so grateful to have found an Internet role model who hasn't been afraid to grow and evolve beautifully

I have wavy/curly hair, when I style with my curly method, my curls last between wash days. If I were to blow dry straight and style with heat curls, they fall in less than 30 minutes
