To me the method is about educating yourself about your hair type, the needs of your scalp, and about finding the best products and practices that help you and your hair look and feel their best. It’s so easy to get lost in a sea of conflicting opinions, especially when you’re seeking advice from people who will make money from your choices.
I for one, didn’t realize that my hair was wavy until I wound up between stylists because of a move. I decided to grow out a pixie just to see what would happen if I grew out my bangs and all the layers.
The main issue I have had is that my hair is so fine and lacking in natural body that it is really important not to over condition. All the curly/wavy advice led me to over condition and under cleanse. Excess moisture is a problem for me, so is using too many products.
Based on her advice my ordinary routine hasn’t changed, but I am using different products that seem to work better for my hair type.
Oiling with camellia oil, just a tiny bit, clarifying shampoo, a not too heavy conditioner, lightweight leave in detangling spray, air dry in a braid. Simple.
I don’t color my hair, and it’s healthy so I don’t use all the steps.

Not everything works for me in her method - I've had mixed results with leave-ins and oils - but double cleansing and bond repair have gotten me SO much closer to the soft, thick, shiny hair I'd love to have!
I spent at least a decade (maybe two) following haircare guidelines from the Long Hair Community Forums (anyone here remember those. I did years of WO (water only) and CO (conditioner only) cleansing, avoided silicones and sulfates like the plague, used the cheapest Suave conditioners exclusively, did vinegar rinses, no heat, air dried exclusively, tried clay for washing, bought all the natural oils and made my own DIY hair products - and while my fine and curly but relatively thick hair grew long (mid-thigh length was my high water mark, it kept getting thinner and frizzier. I blamed perimenopause and hormones and stress. and then happened across one of Abbey Yung's videos about shampoo and the necessity of scalp care. It made a huge difference! Just that one step - and then I added in bond repair and the change in the texture of my hair has been night and day! Who knew that curly hair didn't have to be rough feeling and impossible to detangle

Her method is garbage and money wasted on hair. First Her before treatment is a huge waste because instead of cheap real coconut oil or jojoba oil she recommends an OGX silicone based coconut oil which WILL NOT penetrate the hair or doing anything. She says leave it on for an hour as pre wash. This is money down the drain. Also, be warned that bond repair is for damaged hair that was chemically treated. If you hair is not chemically treated this will ruin your hair as it's trying to repair something that isn't there. Be very careful about bond repair. I use it in bleach and after a bleach highlight but never use it as a regular routine. Her method in itself is causing build up. Too many products. A good clarifying treatment once a month can be done with equal parts water and vinegar (I use white vinegar) then conditioner. Just remember less is always best. Shampoo, condition and a heat protectant if using heat. Wavy and curly hair have different needs for leave ins like curl creams, gels, moisture, etc. Glad you found what works for you.

From a science perspective, I actually think it’s really hard to understand. What exactly is the Abby Young method beyond product products.
With that said, I’ve definitely am being more intentional with my hair care and I’m optimistic.
At the same time, I should mention that I definitely have bought some products which were not a good match for my thicker hair which I bought due to her videos before they were more comprehensive. I feel like right now in June July 2026 she’s getting a little bit more detailed. More specifically, I recently saw that the couple products she influenced me to buy she put in a category for medium hair rather than thick hair.
But this video was spot on
I’m launching my own very separate career in the next year and I’m gonna have a legacy page. Where all the more academic science take homes are very bolded and easy to understood.
Would absolutely love if she could do that
But appreciate all the work from everyone to help us better understand ourselves in our beautiful hair

I have seen definite improvements in my hair using the method. My baseline hair is virgin medium length hair (not dyed, rarely heat styled) with oily scalp and dry ends. I’m now getting compliments from strangers on my hair which is perhaps a first.
All of what I’m using (different products on different days, washing my hair every other day, not using all of these alternatives all at once of course):
Shampoo:
Regular- Pantene abundant & strong or Dove intensive repair
Clarifying- Ouai detox or Pantene volumizing
Conditioner:
Pantene abundant & strong, Dove intensive repair, Dove bond strength hair mask
Leave-in conditioner:
Fenty’s or Pureology’s
Hair oil:
Bumble & Bumble invisible oil
I’m debating bringing K18 bond repair back into the mix but I think this $100 bond repair product is probably overkill for my non-damaged hair.
Overall my hair looks much shinier, less poofy, less dry at the ends, and less oily at the root!

It took me 53 years to grow my hair as long as Kayley’s, and it’s all because of a modified version of Abbey’s method. I think the K18 is doing most of the heavy lifting. I use the Dove Repair shampoo, conditioner, and mask. My hair gets its first sign of grease on day 5, so it gets washed every 5 days. It’s bleached, thin, and fine but healthy and shiny. I put a little mousse at the roots every 5 days, so product build up isn’t an issue. I alternate between shampoo, conditioner or mask, rinse, towel dry, and use Pureology’s leave in conditioner then blow dry. I’ll use a heat protectant if I’m curling my hair. Five days later, I shampoo, towel dry, use the K18, and after 4 minutes, I’ll go in with a heavier leave in conditioner, and only use heat protectant if I’m curling my hair after a blow out. I finally have shiny, healthy hair.

I have wavy hair and love love love how loreal everpure bond treated my hair. I repurchased twice, branched out with some other products and honestly, I need to go back to abbey approved ones! but this time, I want to try some of her other recs for coarse/thick hair. But yeah, Everpure bond shampoo, treatment, and conditioner were SO nice for my hair. It legit was so soft, and I got compliments on how it smelled often! I used ogx miracle oil pre shower occasionally. For post shower I also used loreal's 10 in 1 leave in spray, and ogx's coconot oil spray. All these worked wonderful tbh. Her methods have helped keep my hair so soft, managebly, tangle free and shiny. I didnt even realize my hair was spoiled until I washed using my sisters random stuff and my hair came out PARCHED and tangled on the other side!

I’m genuinely confused why people act like the Abby Young method is some revolutionary discovery. Double shampooing conditioner/mask is basic hair washing If you have medium or long hair, of course you need conditioner or you won’t even be able to brush it properly.
I keep watching these videos trying to understand what’s so groundbreaking about it, but it sounds like the same routine many of us have been doing for years. Shampoo, condition, occasional mask or bond repair product that’s not exactly a secret formula.
And honestly, doing all of this consistently didn’t magically make my hair grow faster or stop breakage/shedding. So I don’t get why people praise it like it’s life-changing science. Am I missing something here

I’ve been trying to learn more about the Abbey Yung method. I have very oily roots. I wash every other day but if I need my hair to be very fresh, I’ll have to wash again the next day. I bleach my hair no more than twice a year. I have very fine, wavy hair that tangles so bad! My ends look dry but don’t feel dry. I currently use pureology hydrate sheer that saves my tangled hair! I hardly have any tangles at all but my hair is still oily so that part I haven’t figured out yet. I use k18 mask. I also started using Olaplex oil. I haven’t added a clarifying shampoo yet but that my next step. If that doesn’t help the oily roots, I may have to switch from using pureology or maybe Im just stuck have oily roots.

I have been following the Abby Yung method for a while now and I have never had better results. My hair is the longest and healthiest it has even been and it's bleached. I used to have long hair but the ends were sparse and kept breaking. Now my hair is shiny and very soft even though it's curly-ish and very poofy when I don't dry it with a brush. I adjusted the method with some of the products I already had and used because I live in Europe and some of the products she recomends are not available. I don't understand why people are not willing to actually look into it but make blanked statements without doing their research and spreading misinformation. Thank you for this video!

I have long silver curls and I do follow the Abbey Yung Method. Not exactly but with the basics. I have been experiencing some shedding and a seeing a dermatologist for that, so I use products more suited to thinning hair. I use Briogeo for hair density shampoo and conditioner and alternate those with Pantene Abundant and Strong. I clarify with Dai clarifying shampoo once a week, followed by a deep conditioner. I only use bond repair every two weeks or so as my hair is generally healthy. There is a lot to appreciate to Abbey’s method but like you said, you have to tailor it to your individual hair care needs. Loved your explanation of her method.

I have wavy to curly hair, no dyes, no chemical treatments, diffuse drying on medium heat with a heat protectant. In short, pretty much undamaged hair. I have tried several bond repair systems; the original Olaplex, Elvive Bond Repair as well as Redken Acidic Bond Repair and without fail my hair ends up soft and shiny and. perfectly straight. Bond repair just nukes my waves & curls, and it takes several shampoos for them to come back. I just don't understand why that's happening!
I've haven't tried K-18 yet; my previous experiences with bond builders make me hesitant to spend that amount of money on something I might end up giving away.

I hope Abby can explain like you. I love how you give so much info but very nice way and easy to follow. She is great. I have my 90% product from her recommendation. But she give too much info which becomes hard to follow. I am not Gen Z. Actually 35yrs old and a math PhD holder. I love research. At the same time I am a professor so I know how to explain effectively. People come to look for solutions for hair are all desperate so want straightforward explanation. Dont want too much nitty gritty. Even her product recommendation videos nowadays are too much talking instead of straightforward solution.

My hair improved so much with Abbey's methods and product recommendations, with one recent change with even more improvment - Olaplex No 3plus blows away K18 or epres. I will be using Olaplex 3 from now on. My whole family loves the Pantene Sheer Volume. I use it as a first wash every time (I don't wash as often as I should, out of sheer laziness. Dove Intensive Repair has been great also.
Some new bonding products, like Trader Joe's shampoo and conditioner, don't appear to have any bonding technology, just protein.

oh her recommendations changed my life! my biggest takeaway is that having one shampoo conditioner that I use every time throughout the whole year is just absolutely not ok for my hair. understanding the difference and alternating between deep cleansing and more conditioning/reparative options has helped me so much! I have very long, undyed, thin and straight hair and I used to cut it maybe every 2-3 years, but since implementing her recommendations two years ago, I need to cut it every 6 months!

I came across the AYM in 2023 I think and since then I am using her method and I stopped having breakage in my hair and I don't have dry ends anymore. I am focusing also on my scalp lately, since I lose a lot of hair, and it seems I used to have inflames scalp. Anyway, my favorite step are the mask and the bond repair (which I don't do often lately, but it was in my routing at the very beginning. I use also coco and eve elixir oil as heat protectant and this is the product I keep buying over and over!

I have been using the method for 4 months and I have been tweaking it somewhat regularly. At first I tried to use EVERY product, but I'm slowly figuring it out. My hair dresser has commented on the improvement in the condition of my hair. I love hearing about the products you're using and the way you are using them. I have to say, I enjoy the Epres as well. I use that when I'm not using a bonding treatment. This was a great breakdown of her method, thank you.

Wow! Great video! Quick question: I’ve been doing the garnier bond builder treatment, shampoo after, then shea moisture bond masque and then shea moisture bond leave in before styling (FYI- there are several other steps that i do, but I’m focusing on the bond repair steps regarding my question. Are you saying that I only need to use one bond repair treatment per shampoo and that what I’m currently doing is too much Thanks in advance for your response!

Kayley! This video made my whole week! You are such a gem and your kindness means so much to me
-SUCH good ideas for carousel posts. I immediately wrote them down in my notes lol.
-THE INGREDIENTS LIST WITH PROTEINS BOLDED. This is everything thank you for showing this visually!
-Couldn't agree more on not using 10 new products all at once. this is almost surely a recipe for disaster
-I love your version of the method
Thank you x1000

Hi! I really love your hair color. I feel like my hair colour is similar to what yours is when you show the before photos but I’m trying to stay away from bleach and haven’t coloured it for a few years. Are you just using Colour now to lighten your hair Would love to know what you are doing trying to stay more natural as I used to be bleach blonde and have a wedding coming up! Thank you for any help!
